Castles & Crusades: Collectors Box?

Post by Ogre »

How hard is it to play with just what's in the collectors box, would I be left seriously wanting a better solution? the full books? or it it pretty self contained and complete?

I sort of dig the idea of everything fitting into a small box like that.

The white box is a homage to the old D&D white box from back in the 70's.

Yes everything is playable, but it is a scaled down version of the rules. If your looking for more than the basics, then definitely buy the regular books. The white box is more of a collectors item thing.

Oh, did I mention that it also comes with old school dice that you have to crayon fill the numbers.

There are a few of us who have played with just the Collector's Box and it works just fine. There are a few minor differences like the experience point chart for some classes are different than in the PHB.

Some of us do still hold out hope that someday the Collectors Box might be redone, but that is likely never to happen.

But Sir Ironside is right, get the books if you really want to get deep into C&C.

Collector's box is all the essential basics of C&C, but it is, very basic. And damn good. And yes, the idea of everything in one digest-sized box is awesome.

But if you want a game that has a little more substance, I can't recommed the new PHB and M&T enough.

I do intend to run the game as a dungeon crawl board game similar to heroquest... with that being said, does the basic box make more sense for what I want to do?

Hmm, well sure the Collector's Box can work but there are no movement rules per se in that set. The hardcover books go into more detail about movement, and flanking/back-attacks, etc that will be more useful in a HeroQuest type game (as I assume you are going to use a battlemat, or a board of some sort).

The collectors box was a quickly put together nostalgia project and a means of showcasing a very basic version of the game.

Experienced game masters can do a fair bit with it if they want to do a lot of houseruling and adding on.

It was a great 'proof of concept' project.

I personally love it. I have a collector's set and I have considered getting another one down the line. Haven't decided if it was because of the stripped down rule set or if it was because it's all digest sized!

Dang it...it's one of the few C&C items I do not own. I guess I'm going to have to snag it. It is still available, no?

TLG had a bunch at GenCon... in the shrinkwrap even! I knew I should have picked one of those up.

My FLGS has some left, and it seems you can still order them from Troll Lord directly.

if it comes down to it I would certainly be willing to send someone a copy from my FLGS if they send me the money via paypal.
