C&C Newbie - What do I really need to buy to run a game?

Post by SDon78 »

Greetings!

I'm interested in getting into C&C, possible running a C&C campaign in the future.

Specifically, what materials do I "really" need? I really can't afford to spend much money in this.

Accordingly, I've found several copies of the Collector's Boxed Set for sale at a reasonable price, but have now heard that these miniature books do not contain all the rules. Is this true? Would I make out ok then if I bought the Player's Handbook and Monsters & Treasures books instead (any printing???)? What about the Castle Keeper's Guide?

I'm tempted to buy the boxed Collector's edition, but I've been told that there is a great deal of the game missing from these minibooks.

Please assist...

IMO, you can start w/ the PHB. Order it now and you'll have the 4th printing. ifyou get an older printing, it will be fine, none of them are new 'editions' just a tweak here and there, some errata fixed, and such like. the exception is the barbarian in the 4th print PHB which is all new, and much better, but the old one works. they are so different, you could use both and not confuse them.

M&T won't hurt, but if you have like, $30, I'd say get the PHB, Download "A Lion in the ropes" from Trolllord.com, and spend the other 10 on a module or two.

M&T is great, actually.

So is Enginerring Dungeons.

The CKG isn't available yet, so don't sweat that.

To answer your question, you just really really need the PHB and dice.

and Welcome aboard!

also, check out the Domesday book for some freebie adventures and such. you can download it at
www.cncsociety.org

and there are great modules available from Brave Halfling Publishing, www.bravehalflingpublishing.com

Full disclosure: I'm one of the halflings, but honestly, people agree they are good.

He forgot to mention dice.
Seriously though, you can get by with just the PHB or even the free Quickstart rules. Add in M&T and you could run games for years if you wanted.

Like Relaxo said...the PHB is a must. Depending on if you like to make your own adventures or run published ones sort of guides you on the buy the modules or get M&T.

For me, liking to do my own stuff, the must haves were the PHB and M&T.

There is also the Castles & Crusades Society which is slowly putting together house rule type resources and the Domesday Book which are freebies.

Happy crusading!

The only books you need to play and run this game are the PHB and the M&T. Everything else is optional.

Thanks for all the replies!

So, I will get a hold of the PHB and M&T.

To be sure, would the mini-PHB and M&T in the original "Collectors Edition" Boxed Set be acceptable, or should I just grab the printed full sized versions separately?

The books in the collectors set only have 4 classes and 3 races. They are digest rules and were really only put out as a nostalgia set emulating the OD&D white box.

If you want the complete game, the PHB and M&T current printings are your best deal.

Peter, is it fair to say the QS rules = the box set? or is that too simplified?

No... I would say that is too simplified. The info contained for the four classes show level progression up to 10th level where as the QS does only up to level 4. Besides, there is also the booklet dealing with Monsters and Treasure which the QS doesn't have.
As much as I love the little boxed set, the better value in the long run is unquestionably the actual PHB and M&T.

Well, there's both more and less depending on what you're looking at. But it is fair to say that the Boxed Set is generally only good for those who already have a great deal of experience adding their own rules, classes ect.

There are folks here who swear by the boxed set. And there is certainly nothing wrong with that. But looking at it from an over all complete deal, the two hard backs are still the best value in the long run.

For that extra $10, you get a lot more bang for your buck. $15 if you need dice.

Either xerox your character sheet from the PHB or go to here:
http://www.mad-irishman.net/pub_candc.html

I prefer the mad irishman's but ymmv.

I would recommend the Players Handbook and Monsters and Treasures.

Technically, you don't need to buy anything to run the game, depending on what that means to you... you can get the Quick Start for free, and there should be a M&T sampler available as a free download as well. I'd assume, as a person interested in role-playing, you'd have dice already.... and if not, you could still get away with it by using nothing more than a single d6 (it gets more complicated, but possible) to determine the results of any given range of dice. But, for a better answer:

PHB is an essential book for the "scope" of C&C. M&T is critical if you want to run the game and not have to invent everything. Other books might be useful as well, but those are pretty subjective.
