Rate of Fire for Missile Weapons?

Hi folks,
Looking through the 4th printing of the PHB, and I can't seem to find where rates of fire and reload times are located for the various missile weapons.
Maybe I am just blind. Are they in there?
Thanks.

1 shot per round. There is nothing extra on ROF because for all intents and purposes it is 1/1.

yep, they're all 1 missile / round except for fighters level 10 or higher, then they're two / round.
This is rules-light, baby.
Also, a round is only 10 seconds in C&C so it makes sense too. not 1 minute like 2nd ed.

So then does a shortbow and a heavy crossbow then have the same rof?

Per the book, yes. Per your own houserulz, whatever you want.

A reasonable advantage a short bowman might have would be being able to fire and move (since running with your foot in the heavy crossbow trying to recock it looks silly and that is why Centaurs never use heavy crossbows.)

I like your way of thinking but why would a short bowman have an advantage at moving? I would think that a tall bowman would have a longer stride.

We use the 1st Ed rules for bows and x-bows; long bow short bow 2/arrows per round (one at the beginning and one at the end of the round) light crossbow 1 per round and heavy crossbow, one bolt every other round. Makes more sense as you can release arrows far quicker than bolts.

That's not too bad a rule. It's not terribly realistic to have the same rate of fire on all the missle weapons, but I think it would be unfair if they were terribly different than each other or different from missle weapons. I think having them "ranged" weapons is enough for C&C, IMHO, and a ROF of 1/round does me fine.

Yes, but he got knocked out by a low hanging branch.

keep in mind though an ad&d round is minute long and a C&C round is 6 seconds.

It's at least better than the 3.x version, where (if I recall) you can get up to seven arrows in 6 seconds...now that's fast.

impossibly so. Now this last summer I was at Pennsic on the archery line and a light crossbow(wo)man was able to lock load aim and shoot as fast as I could with a recurve...and far more accurately too (dammit). In practice, as we were, you get cleared to shoot 6 arrows or bolts and it rarely takes more that 2 minutes to unleash that many, taking a fair amount of time aiming. I have never tried to rapid fire so I have no frame of reference, I have also never had the adrenaline rush of having some slavering beast charging me while I hoped this would be the arrow that drops it.

When you experience an adrenalin dump due to immediate danger, you lose some of your fine motor control. According to a (fairly) recent FBI report, law enforcement officers in a firefight missed about 80 percent of their shots. They are also trained to hand cycle the slide of their pistol instead of manipulating the slide lever, which requires fine motor control. All this to say: I doubt anyone in the history of ever could fire 6 bolts or arrows in 6 or even 10 seconds and even if they could, they wouldnt hit much.

Wonder what would be considered a good ROF for a longbowman. I know in the era of the Brown Bess a British soldier was expected to sustain a rate of fire of two shots a minute.
