Ruminations on more than one class.

Post by gideon_thorne »

Ya know, something odd occurred to me about characters who have more than one class, but with semi related abilities.

In dual classing in particular, consider the ranger and the thief. Does it seem odd to anyone else that, when starting in one of these classes, then moving on to the other, that the character would suddenly forget how to be stealthy. And then have to relearn everything for a new environment?

It seems to me that the character ought to be able to adapt some of their former training for this class add on, especially if a given class ability is near identical.

The inspiration abilities of the knight, paladin and bard for another example

Something for folks to think on.

Did you have a player trying to apply a literal interpretation of the rules in place of that ever-dwindling commodity, common sense?

Nope. Just something I was thinking over while staring at the wall.

Funny you should mention that. I picked up the 4th printing PHB shortly after my return to the gaming table and was pleasantly surprised to find multi-classing rules.
On paper, I'm really impressed with the two options. It remains to be seen how they do in actual play but I don't foresee any problems. With the addition of adjuncts (Crusader 14 http://www.trolllord.com/crusader/crusader14.html), C&C offers the class building blocks I have always wanted.

I love a class based system but don't like archetypal characters. Or, rather, I don't like limiting players to only archetypal characters. The biggest reason being the oddities that come up when a player has a concept in his head that just doesn't fit one of the archetypes (something which can't easily be emulated with a simple +2 here or altered attribute check there, etc.).

The dual-classing issue you brought up is one of the worst. I tend to toss the rules out the window when they don't suit my game anyway but I still like a logical and lite rules environment that encourages experimentation. Much like college really.
