Damage Reduction (suggestions for implementation & xp co

Post by Sakusammakko »

I am working on a westernized monk class which I will post as soon as I've got it close to finished. I wonder if you could walk me through some of the pros/cons of damage reduction.

Also, what would I charge in XP to have it from 1st level?

I'd like to give the class the ability to reduce the damage from a limited number of attacks per day. The progression would look like this:

LEVEL RESIST PAIN

1 1/1d4

2 1/1d4

3 1/1d4

4 2/1d6

5 2/1d6

6 2/1d6

7 3/1d8

8 3/1d8

9 3/1d8

10 4/2d4

where 1/1d4 means the monk can resist 1d4 in damage from one attack per day. That increases to 2 attacks for 1d6 in damage at 4th level, etc.

I've noticed that the Barbarian's Primal Will kicks in at 8th level and only reduces 1 point of damage, though that ability is not limited in the number of times it can be used.

Some alternatives come to mind:

1) Reduce the effectiveness of the damage reduction. Make it 1 hit point vs. 1 attack rising to 2 hps vs. 2 attacks at 4th level, 3 hps vs. 3 attacks at 7th level, etc.

2) Keep the original table, but make it a CON check. Now there's a 50/50 chance to reduce 1d4 in damage from 1 attack per day at 1st level.

What do you think?

Thanks.

An update

I found Serleran's Abilities cost list for 3.X

In it, he recommends that damage reduction should cost 1000/point.

As my initial idea is not to have DR for each attack, but only a limited number, the xp cost should be lower. Here's what I've come up with:

The average benefit for 1d4 DR is 2 1/2 points or 2500 xp. However, this is for only one attack. So I will arbitrarily divide the cost by 10 to make it 250 from level 1. There will be additional bumps at 4th, 7th and 10th for the additional DR benefits.

How does this sound?

We have been talking about adapting the Hackmaster Basic DR system in general.

So based on that, the only thing I would suggest is get rid of the dice roll, go with a fixed value for faster resolution.
