What alignment are you?

Not the characters you play but you personally, where do you see yourself as defined in the players handbook?

I'd like to think I'm lawful good...but we all know that s*** just isn't true.

WotC says I'm CN, Quiz Farm says I'm NG and Hits Web says I'm CG, so I'm taking the average.

I'll go with: chaotic neutral (evil tendencies), and then, only because evil is thought to be somewhat selfish. If we're using Palladium, I'd be anarchist.

I choose Chaotic good, but then did teh quiz on quiz farm (first I've heard of it) and it says Neutral good.

So it's all good.

I fall into the "for the greater good" camp pretty neatly, even if I do have some "lawful" tendencies. But not all laws are good...and those that aren't should be scrapped if we simply can't ignore them.

I would have to say that I'm LN. I don't necessarily like some of the laws of the land, but I follow them like a good little lemming. It's better than chaos, I reckon.

I philosophically believe True Neutral is probably the "right" Alignment (as in most accurate description of the Universe), but I try to act Neutral Good.

I'm NG with a bit of chaos thrown in for spice, which is funny considering I'm a SNCO and am sworn to uphold the laws, support the officers appointed above me, and force the jr enlisted to conform to the rules and regulations etc etc ...

No one is perfect exemplar of any alignment (We're human afterall) but general tendancies is what I'm after. Then think of that as you either RP or CK alignments (the exceptions to this are the clerics and paladins who have to have more strict adherence to alignment than other classes).

Chaotic Evil (Neutral tendencies). About the only time I act Chaotic Neutral is when I let random chance dictate things without giving a damn if it helps or hurts. The rest of the time I simply will stop at nothing to make sure things benefit me, despite random chance.

Clavis, it's good you mentioned your alignment as Neutral Good, because there is no such thing as "True Neutral" except in animals. Animals function on instinct and have no moral compass, thus their actions are neither good nor bad, lawful nor chaotic, no matter how the population at large may see it. Humans claiming they are "True Neutral" are full of it. In order to be truly "Neutral", a human being cannot make a decision, because the very act of making a decision, any decision, would drive the alignment compass away from "Neutral" and towards one or both alignment extremes: law, chaos, good, evil. So in short, if a being makes a decision of any kind, he/she can't call themselves "Neutral".

(Just a note for those unfamiliar, this view of "True Neutral" is in my house rules, as well as "The Gray Book".)

Arazmus, the pope is Lawful Evil. He enforces the boundaries given to him by the doctrine of the church (Lawful), but at the same time tries to ensure that he (and by extension the church since he IS the church) isn't affected by the corruption that infests the Catholic Church (selfish, therefore Evil).

I think that maybe we should stick to discussing the alignments of fictional and/or possibly historical figures if we're looking for comparision points, rather than bringing up major current figures in culture/religion/politics ...

I went for Neutral Good. While I'm quite law-abiding overall, I've certainly broken a few (minor) laws in my time and I have no problem with civil disobedience for a good cause.

The other view of true neutral is just true apathy, given the number people on anti-depressents these days there are a lot more true neutrals running around than you might think.

The pope certainly isn't evil. I, however, retract the question as it's dangerously close to being political.

Agree with the both points, but at the same time I think very few people are ONE alignment all the time. Alignment is just general tendancy given one's personal inclination. Circumstances often dictate...the truly chaotic person isn't going to go 20mph over the speed limit when there is a trooper with a radar gun he can see and avoid just to prove the point that he's chaotic.

I regard Alignment not as an descriptor of behavior, but rather an indication of what side the character is on in the grand struggle for ultimate control of the Cosmos, whether knowingly or unknowingly. A Lawful Good character is on the side of Heaven, and his actions will ultimately further Heaven's cause. He might personally be a real nasty individual, however. Conversely, a Chaotic Evil person acts ways that ultimately further the agenda of the Demonic Hordes (creating chaos, uncertainty, and madness), even if he is personally rather charming and often generous. Most people are not strongly Aligned, because most are not aware of what side they're actually on. They might be quite surprised to learn they are actually "Chaotic Evil", for example. In this view, a character's actions flow from their Alignment; their actions don't determine their Alignment.

As for True Neutral, I regard that as the side that believes there shouldn't be a grand cosmic struggle at all. It's opposition could be active (in which case the charcter actually tries to combat the influence of all other factions), or passive (in which case the character just doesn't care and lives its life as if the struggle wasn't happening). Philosophical Taoism would be a real-world example of True Neutral.

I have considered replacing the usual Alignment terms with direct descriptions of the cosmic sides. So, someone's Alignment wouldn't be "Lawful Evil", but rather "Hell". True Neutral would become either "Nature" or "Cosmic Balance".

Even the Taoist has to make a decision at some point in his life, and in doing so cannot claim to be "Neutral". Ah well. I just have to accept that we see things very differently regarding what is Neutral.

It may be possible for a human to be true neutral, if they are truly insane. But, then, is choice a matter of conscious action, or is it dictated by environment?

Heh. Relativity is best left to Einstein, sometimes.

Only an animal can be truly Neutral. The criminally insane would be all uniformly Chaotic, since they are mad and they are breaking the law. On the Good/Evil axis, since they really aren't aware that what they are doing is in fact wrong, they'd be Neutral in that regard.

Therefore, Chaotic Neutral.

In fact...that could be a very good way for me to judge insanity. An alignment change to Chaotic Neutral...hmmm....
