nice one, I am also a game suitable riddle collector. I'll track mine down in the next day or two, select the good ones that aren't repeats and I'll post em up here.
But IMO solving riddles via a dice roll takes all the fun away.

I agree, however it always seemed wrong to just give the party a riddle and let them sink or swim. Lets be honest the character may have a high int or come from a culture that uses riddling as a pass time, but the player may not be the sharpest pencil at the table ...I eventually started giving extra hints vis DM to player notes when the character would have an incite that the player didn't.
I have a copy of some Anglo Saxon stuff some where that I love to use, I'll see if I can find it. -

The feat that was in Fantasy Riddles that I converted to a secondary skill, could be used as just a normal rule. It's a pretty good system for handling riddles. Here it is.
RIDDLE SOLVING
(wisdom-general)
You are particularly skilled at solving riddles. You delight in opportunities to test your wits against them and sometimes find guilty pleasure in watching others struggle with them. You might also have a riddle or two handy to inflict upon your fellow adventurers during lengthy travels or around the campfire or worse yet, just before turning in for the night.
When using riddle solving to answer a riddle the checks are as follows: CL -5 for eliminating a possible answer before it is used (I think the answer maybe water.
Does that seem right?), CL 0 for a hint ("You remember a similar riddle where the answer wasnt a word but a single letter."), CL 5 for a straight answer (You remember hearing this one before. The answer is man.).
Another attempt has a CL +10 higher than the last skill check. The possibility for a second chance isnt always there after a wrong answer has been given. For instance a riddle that triggers a trap or a stone golem requesting a specific password probably wouldnt allow a second try.
Gnomes in particular love riddles. They gain a +2 racial bonus on Riddle Solving checks.

I prefer my way of handling it, based very much on an obviously recognizable reason...
Riddlemaster (Wisdom): Halflings are skilled in the arts of riddle-making and deciphering, able to ascertain insight from meager clues. This ability, with a successful check, allows a halfling to know the answer to a particular riddle. The complexity, or brevity, of the riddle determines the difficulty, though additional clues provide bonuses; the Castle Keeper must set the difficulty -- for those who do not wish to use an ability for such instances, preferring to have the players figure the riddle out, a halfling should be given more time to come up with an answer; it is suggested non-halflings have one minute, while a halfling player has five.
I am not really fond of dicing out of a situation that tests the player. But, oh well.

Nice ones, zara.
I'm a bit of a riddle junkie, too. I've got a small portion of my library devoted to riddles, brain teasers, and the like, and I try to get them in my games as often as I can.

Serl, I've never seen that before, but as a fan of Halflings (and the "obviously recognizable reason") I'm adding that to my home brew ASAP ! again thanks for sharing!
I agree with you on not liking to letting the player roll there way out of using their brain so I'd modify it to give the player extra time and extra hints kind of in line with Peter's riddle solving.
Zara, thanks there are some good ones there.

That could also apply to some bards as well.

Yes, but for the setting that it was written for, bards did not exist and halfling was a class.

Here is a visual riddle.
It is a tall, round obelisk made out of marble and the semi-circles are made out of black marble. For your game purpose you can make it as large as you want but a diameter of about 20 feet or so is a good sweet spot. I had the black marble bases about 6 feet in diameter and somewhat inset about half way only showing half of the black pillar with it slowly tapering to the top and ends before reaching the top of the white obelisk.
The riddle.
There is a portal to "*******" between the pillars.
You can enhance the riddle with something like, "You must place your hand on the portal way and say 'X' incantation." or, something more creative.

What is the solution?

Could be fun... The Middle Pillar

They need to get to "********" and can only get to it through the portal. There are 3 pillars and most search between the black pillars, along the obelisk, for the portal. I should note that the portal remains hidden with no obvious signs like sparkly lights.
Quote:

The portal is really one of the black pillars.
When the portal is found it doesn't light up you just have to walk through it once activated.
