The Lands of Cransadun

Post by PhreakinDeacon »

Apologies in advance if this is in the wrong forum; I couldn't find any others in the C&C section better suited to posting of our campaign worlds, so here goes. As you can see, the world has quite a bit of Middle Earth and Warhammer influence, along with a good bit of Celtic tinge as well (in fact, the sketch map I have is basically the world of Slaine).

Here's the first couple realms, I'll write more as I have time.
A GRAND TOUR OF CRANSADUN

"Cransadun" (an Elvish name meaning "Domain of the World-Tree") is a region in the northwestern part of the main continent on the world of Materia. The region with which we are concerned encompasses a half-dozen or more independent realms.
Redwyne

By far the largest realm in Cransadun, the land of Redwyne is ruled by a hereditary Lord from the ruling family, currently the Pendorals. The current Lord is Luther Pendoral. His wife, Lady Veronica d'Arnise Pendoral, is of the ruling family of the pagan nation of Broceliande to the south. Although the marriage was arranged for political reasons (up until a decade ago, the two nations were at war), it still has not endeared Luther to the powerful priests of Empyrean.

Relations with the denizens of Broceliande have been calmed by the Pendoral-d'Arnise marriage, but Redwyne is still besieged by the dreadful fomorians of the Toadfens, and at times by the elves of the Ironwood or marauding grindylow.
Ironwood

The Ironwood, to the north of Redwyne, is a sort of buffer zone between it and the dreadful Toadfens of the north. It is a civilized nation, inhabited by the elves, but the elves of the Ironwood are hardened by centuries of battle against the fomorians that inhabit the northern part of their forests. The elves are known to make their way into Redwyne on occasion, often with disastrous results, as they are quick to see folk as in league with their foe, and the Church of Empyrean is none too kind to elvenkind.

The elves of the Ironwood are ruled by King Amadordaidran.
Dahlia

There is another realm in the mountains between Ironwood and the Toadfens, although few ever see it and fewer still ever tell of it. Dahlia, one of the realms belonging to the dreaded dark elves, is located in the benighted deeps below the Stormwall Mountains. Two gates lead into the hellish kingdom: Annwvyn in the mountains, and Cliath Cysgod ("Gate of Shadow") in the forest of Mirkwood.

The Toadfens

Located to the northwest of the Ironwood, these dismal swamps surround the Firth of Morough and stretch as far north as the foot of the Lochlann Glacier. The Fens are infested with the animals which give them their name, and also mark the foothold of the fomorians on the mainland of Cransadun. Their greatest fortress in the Fens is Frostcrag, in the extreme north of the Fens near Lochlann. Other than the fomorians, the Fens are inhabited by the grindylow, creatures blending piscine, serpentine, and humanoid features into a loathsome whole (if you've ever seen the Magic card Thief of Hope, that's kinda what the grindylow look like).
Lochlann

The icy lands of Lochlann stretch over the northernmost regions of the world, from the borderlands of Strandsvar and the Toadfens on the mainland and over a goodly portion of the northern seas. The sea-ice, brought far south of the arctic by the dark influence of Hob Anagarak (yes, from Ghostbusters ) is inhabited by nought except polar bears, arctic animals, and fomorians. The greatest of the fomorian cities, Craigmorough, is located on the sea floor beneath the ice. South of Lochlann are the Ragged Isles, a clump of rocky spires projecting from the seas inhabited by fomorians and foul-tempered storm giants alike.
Snowdonia

Nestled between the waters of Lough Snowdon, Mirkwood, the Cameron River, and the Flintjag Mountains lies the land of Snowdonia, an elven stronghold. Ruled from the fortress of Harlech by the reclusive Lady Ysolde Stormsea ap Deigh, the inhabitants are mainly high elves displaced from their former home at Caergwynn (now Cliath Cysgod) by the drow of Dahlia. The Snowdonian elves are seeking an alliance with Redwyne to reclaim Caergwynn.
Need to write up more, this is all I have for now. This is kind of a little preview, as I'm hoping to get a PDF written up with a more in-depth version of the setting.

I love Slaine, so I am sure I will like the flavor of your setting.
Since its 20,000 I suggest "Captain Nemo" as his title. Beyond the obvious connection, he is one who sails on his own terms and ignores those he doesn't agree with...confident in his journey and goals.
Sounds obvious to me! -Gm Michael

Strandsvar

Strandsvar is located in the coldest reaches of the north, located along the shores of the Boreal Sea abutting Lochlann. One would say that Strandsvar is far too cold to live in - and they'd be right. Strandsvar is not so much a nation as a handful of city-states ruled by immortal necromancer-kings and an expanse of tundra inhabited by the undead. The dominant city-state is Strandsvar.
Broceliande

South of Redwyne is the land of Broceliande. Broceliande is a green, lush land inhabited by good-natured folk. These folk have a grim and somewhat depressive outlook due to the threats to their homeland - pressures from the Church of Empyrean (ameliorated somewhat by the d'Arnise-Pendoral wedding; see Redwyne) and the constant wars with the Samarites from across the sea. The people of Broceliande follow the elemental religious beliefs of the elves, a fact which endears them to few except elves. The king of Broceliande is Alain d'Arnise.
