The Yahoo group

Rather than threadjack the Rolecall thread, I figured I'd start a new one for this particular topic.

Sometime back, a Yahoo group was started, called CandC_Society C&C Society PDF group. You can find it here: http://games.groups.yahoo.com/group/CandC_Society/

Back in july of 05 it magaed to get up to 115 messages, but mostly it's been averaging 10 messages a month. And since back in 06, most of that has been spam.

Is there any plan to actually do something with that group? Sure, the Society is busy trying to get webspace together and so forth, but having an already existing Yahoo group could be handy. I know of folks that use a Yahoo group to co-ordinate a number of games played over IRC with reminders being sent out to members and folks replying back to say whether they'll be showing up or not.

It also has the niceness of having some file hosting, which allows for a backup of a cncplayer.net if it were to have issues for whatever reason, and so forth.

Currently the moderators of the group are Peter, and someone else. I'm sure he could set it up so that the Society officers became moderators. The forums can be set so that you have to "apply" for membership, which means typing a message that the moderators are sent and then approve or reject an application.

The original goal/point of the group is stated as, "This group is dedicated to the production and distribution of FREE PDFs in support of the Castles & Crusades RPG produced by Troll Lord Games." Currently, everything in there (including the errata) dates from 2 years ago.

I'm just wondering if the Society is considering using or resurrecting this group, or if I should just cancel my membership to it.

I really don't know the status of it. I can tell you that there are/were many C&C sites in the first days of the system. They have thinned down a bit. Consider that this system is still getting going and we are spread between Dragonsfoot and these boards. Also there is the Yahoo group, Ravens Keep and The Keepers Den that have seen a decline in traffic as well.

As the system grows I'm sure all of this will pick up.

I've always wondered why one would join groups like that when there is so much good C&C stuff here, and on a few other message boards? Personally, message boards are such a better way to present ideas regarding a topic then in groups.

Just my opinion. I could be totally wrong.

Well, I for one agree with you. Groups are awesome for small, organised bodies of folks, such as local RPGAs, individual games, small mom and pop stores, etc, but generalist pages are a waste of time.
