Rhu,

I've seen this and will reply this week. Right now I'm trying to get final grades in so I'm swamped. Soon!

Hey Rhu,

Sorry about the delay...finals and research papers had the best of me. But I've dug myself out and have the following comments:

***

There’s no HDP or powers to a wooden carriage because it is just that; lightly wooden and not even heavy wood you’d find in a van or flatbed carriage. A single horse vehicle is probably either a Hansom or a Hackney cab w/1 hourse and driver. So, anyone in the 1 horse vehicle would have no protection from firearms save for cover obscurement. A cab is going to be as lightly built as humanly possible so that one horse can pull it…so you’re not even looking at any kind of metal framework. Only something with some kind of armor or really strong build would be considered having the Invulnerable power. Oh, and a battleship should be nearly impossible to hurt by a guy with any kind of handheld firearm!

The big modifier that you didn’t note would’ve been concealment. People riding in a carriage won’t have cover (since the light woods don’t stop much of anything). In fact, shooting the driver or the horse would be simplicity itself, especially Hanson cab the driver has NO cover at all!

“Cover: A character who takes cover gains a bonus to AC, as follows:

1/4 cover +2 AC 1/2 cover +4 AC 3/4 cover +6 AC Full cover +10 AC”

Personally if I’d been running that chase I’d have said the 2 horse carriage would’ve had greater speed in the chase than the 1 horse carriage unless the former was especially weighted; say by multiple passengers. You were correct about the AC10 of the vehicle base though.

So, are you recommending that I should specify that ‘normal’ horse carriages have no armor value in the text? I don’t mind giving some suggestions, but as noted:

“The possible activities and feats possible upon a speeding carriage are too numerous to cover exhaustively. Instead the below will provide some general activities and their modifiers to give the Genteel Magistrate some idea of the range of modifiers and therefore be better able to impose them for events not covered. Unless specified the modifiers only apply to that given round.”

Thus, as you note via SoD you called the evaluation correctly. ;) I don’t want to bog the chase down in tons of rules though, as that sort of defeats the purpose of the “rules light” system I’m going for.

That all makes sense. I guess we fussed over it because we wanted to try these chase rules, but we didn't really have a scenario that exercised them.

No problem, its stuff that comes up!

The carriage chase rules are expected to be a matter of trying to board the other vehicle and battle hand to hand. Gunfire or other ranged weapons just makes it a mobile firefight. ;)

Oh, and to qualify the AC 10, DEX bonuses (esp. for the speed) would apply IMO.

keep on keepin' on guys, these are fascinating!
