Monday night Ne'er do wells 1 off games

Post by Lurker »

So we don't clutter up the other threads ...

I'll try my hand next

Modern Victory

Again, I don't have roll 20 or maptools so it would be theater of the mind and dice rolls old school (I'd trust you all on the rolls) - Tree thanks for the offer, but I like the idea of old school, I trust you all with the rolls & I hope you all trust me . Plus, it will force me to knock the dust off the descriptive and narrative skills so my games with my girls will be better for it - yes I'll use you all like that ;)

Also, again, so I don't have to switch gears too much from being ready for my girls make it Modern Victory, set in general this time frame, Influences (as I mentioned with my girls) will be 'Leverage' 'Persons of Interest' along with Sherlock Holms (book and modern BBC versions) - so a touch on the gilded side with knacks etc - but with Marvel Supers to keep it super. Especially the 'Daredevil' Punisher etc version of Marvel

I'd say try and make a character different from your real Victory character - try out a different flavor and different powers - but Mike, yeah you can make them decedents of the current characters if you like

The world has supers and knows about them but they tend to be lower power, lower flash , there may be an "Iron Man" type, but if there is it is kept under wraps (and you won't play in that league for a long long time)

I'd advise getting skills and not just powers, be rounded ...

House rules

Attributes roll 4 d6, re roll all ones, keep the top 3 d ; re roll any attribute less than 8

Attribute modifiers - per CKG method 2

13 - 14 +1
15 - 16 +2
17 - 18 +3
etc

Also include physical beauty as an attribute

Victory points as BtB

Intuition at rank 2 or above is a little more active than just an init effect

Probability Manipulation can be reactive but at the cost of your next action - Wisdom checks (I'll prompt at times, but some prompts will be red herrings, and you can ask for a check yourself if your own spider senses are going off  ) will let you have a heads up that PM may be needed in the next round or 2

Lightning speed does not require the high Dex as BtB, but maneuvers at speed WILL require dex checks

To keep it lower powered - Power packages are limited to 5 points (but for the 4th or more powers in the packet, it cost 1/2 point for a 1 point power)

I will be lacks on phobias and enemies and watched . you can have more than the 1 per by the book. I'll even let you buy a couple of short comings to be revealed at a future date - yes Mike I am stealing that one from you ! ;)

Skills are expanded from the btb default to current time - more science choices, computer (int) .... Hmmm a little advice ... what skill would driving be under ???? I don't want to make a skill just for that, so what would it fall under ???? - Any suggestions ????

***
House rule from 21 May 2018

Magic - as per book p 20, but a magic practitioner has a pool of powers equal to the power points put into the packet plus the characters intelligence modifier (this give a mage more flexibility than a 'normal' super hero). to activate a power they must make an occult skill check with the TL being that of the power level of the power. ( With thinking about this, you don't need a check for each use of a power after activated. You can have as many powers usable in a combat as you have as your int modifier. In combat you can drop a previously activated power and attempt to activate another power, this takes all actions in the round.

Not sure how to handle future increase to the power as you level up ...

***

Natural 20

Damage - max damage for the attack, plus a normal roll damage - for example a damage of 2 d6 would be 12 plus the result of the roll of the 2 d6.

Healing - outside of extra natural - for a night of rest, 1 hp plus con bonus, plus level ; anyone with a first aid type knowledge (at least from background narrative [was a boy scout, life guard in HS, took JROTC etc etc etc] if not a skill) does 1d4 + wisdom bonus (not sure on adding level). A medical skill does 1 d 8 plus wisdom plus skill ranks plus level. They all require an evening's rest.

Fell free to steal all you want, remember what Jim Dunnigan said: "Good game designers create rules, great game designers steal them!" ;)

Driving...I'd say that its a given skill, like using a fork or a computer mouse. If you want superior driving skills you'd buy it as a true skill.. Maybe 'default' driving allows a roll but no level add but rank 1 gives the level add?

Right now I'm considering Annabelle Du Orleans, AKA Thermodyne. Ice and Heat powers, but with little control over which manifests at a given time. More as I build her.

I'd probably handle Drive like Traveller does. First rank gives you basic proficiency in driving anything with a steering wheel type control method, with gas peddle, brake peddle, and a clutch. Then any ranks above the first applies to a specific group of vehicles. Which in todays world would be car types, Semi's, and heavy equipment. I would do the same with boat/ships as well as piloting planes and helicopters.
Since its 20,000 I suggest "Captain Nemo" as his title. Beyond the obvious connection, he is one who sails on his own terms and ignores those he doesn't agree with...confident in his journey and goals.

As for what I will play, probably a Psycho Kinetic of some kind.

I’m in. I have a concept for a PR specialist for supers that has (to her horror) begun developing powers herself (she as of yet does not know why, maybe it was because she got too close to that haunted house event a few months ago?). It’s going to be a telekinetic sphere kit. It’s going to be rather versatile but I don’t think it will be immediately offensive (no blast power etc). Because as a PR person she prefers the “saving innocents” part of the gig.

We may be able to be able to work as a pair, I was planning on being as offensive as I can. Meaning powers, not what I say, but I will still do that too. So we can maybe do it as a sword and shield kind of pair up.

RVSR .... I wonder what that means ;)

For income, assume middle of the road middle working class / middle class unless you take wealth or poverty. You have enough money to have an apartment or a smallish house in the subburbs. you have a vehicle etc etc etc

I've been thinking for driving, I assume anyone that could know how to drive knows the basics (understanding that those living in large urban centers, especially those in their 20s now, may not know, but those with a rural background almost always know - heck my 11 year old 9 1/2 year old here in OK know except for being able to reach the gas and break petals). They know the basics of moving a vehicle down the road in a moderately safe method. Anyone with a drive skill has more advanced training and can drive safely in a stressful setting.

Now all that said. I have to say "The Lord works in mysterious ways"

Mike, your character is perfect for someone in my girls game, & Tree, your character's job is perfect for the city they are playing in. So, the setting is settled and not a generic 'city' . It is specifically St Paul MN.

Mike, do you want to lean toward the ex-con going to good side, or a good guy working on the edge ? It will decide who your contact is. That said, you have been hired and moved to St Paul as a contractor doing on the spot inspections and advice on weaknesses and needed improvements.

Rhian, remember suppers aren't to the level or as common as Avengers and unique individuals don't normally have / use PR. At least not out in the open. That said you could be a PR guy with a general PR company that happens to have ties to guys that are inventors gadgetiers etc or are the one that works with the newsies to 'modify' stories to keep the suppers profile downplayed. That said, I like the idea of your powers being kicked off by the nearness to a haunted house.

Understood, but unless Fame is a banned shortcoming (I’m not taking it regardless) that means that there is some super out there that probably has a need for a PR firm. It’s more a burgeoning start up that i am passionate about rather than famous firm- and I also have Journalism as a profession so that is likely what I do to make my money. I have my character written up now and will post in tomorrow. I have taken the sidekick disadvantage for having a cameraman. I have him written up (based on a real person) for you to look at as a possibility if you don’t want to write him up yourself or if you end up liking how I handled him. As the GM you have all the say as far as a sidekick goes - usually you would be the one to write him up anyway, but I’ll see if the idea I have for him inspires you since I was inspired to write him up at the same time I did my character. I look forward to more feedback tomorrow.

Crud sorry

I meant the method

Method Three: This method increases the character’s power while having a
standard attribute modification approach and no bell curve, and it manages
to keep the extraordinary (the +4) extraordinary.
Table 1.4 Att ribute

the one that is

& just keep that going.

Again sorry

No problem you making the side kick. It is a big help. However, dial back the martial arts and acrobat. As a side kick he needs to be competent but not a force to be reckoned with himself . I can see a justification for him as a 1st level side kick having 1 rank in them .

Citric acid ... his weakness is orange juice ... has to be a back story there. I'll say he has a fear of acid.

...or a fear of oranges. ;)

Generally sidekicks were expected to have 1/2 the skill and power ranks of the hero to make sure they don't outshine their "hero/ine".

That’s fine I can just put their skill points elsewhere, again this is based on an actual person so I was going for a more accurate representation of them irl as a baseline and then I can adjust it from there.

The citric acid references when a friend of his got 6 of the most sour candies in the word and dared him to put them all in his mouth for three minutes for $200 dollars. He took the bet, won it, but the acid in the candies was actually intense enough (he was in a lot of pain for the challenge) that it caused extensive chemicals burns all throughout his mouth and softened his teeth for a bit. The inside of his mouth actually had to molt in order to heal the damage. But anytime he accidentally ate something with lemon in it during the healing period it would practically take him to his knees. The most notable instance of which was a yogurt that was lemon flavored.

He is Jeremy Dooley of Rooster Teeth/Achievement Hunter if you want to look him up. He just recently failed to qualify for black belt (but then succeeded at the test in a non- testing environment) and was part of a college gymnastics team- so that’s why I put those skills where they were XD but I’m glad to take them down, it will allow me to add different skills.

I was just thinking “who would I want to have my back as a cameraman? And Jeremy Dooley was the guy I immediately thought of. Lol

Autobiography
Owen grew up in the north central mountains of Pennsylvania and always enjoyed hunting as a kid. He was especially good at archery. When he was a teen, Owen won several national archery contests and got a scholarship to Penn State where he studied Journalism.

After graduating, Owen started an online blog about his hunting and was soon contacted by a local hunting magazine. He started to travel, hunt, and write. After a couple of years, Owen was hired by a large, national hunting magazine and moved to St. Paul.

As a hunter/writer, Owen is constantly given state of the art equipment to review. That’s how he has obtained his large hunting gear.

Thanks for the game Les. I need to get my physical dice out next time. That stupid dice app I have on my phone is worse than Roll 20.

I have all of these dice; I kept buying them online, at the store, getting the pound of dice every year, etc. So I have this huge variety of dice. But the only ones I use now are ivory or bone colored with black letters so I can read the damn things.

Sorry I couldn't even hold out to play the game with you all last night. As I am sure my daughter told you, I was asleep before you even started playing.
Since its 20,000 I suggest "Captain Nemo" as his title. Beyond the obvious connection, he is one who sails on his own terms and ignores those he doesn't agree with...confident in his journey and goals.

Well, crap. I'd read that you weren't going to run the game so I'd just assumed there wasn't one. :P

Maybe I'll catch next time... Wich will be? Jun 4?

& you not being there made me have to modify my plan on how to get the group together and focused on the mission. Then Rhian rolled really well and then took the bait better than I planned ... boy I had to learn the art of adlib right out of the gate.

After the breakfast meeting it was back on track.

Again, glad you all enjoyed it

So , it is my game 4 June.

I added my house rule for nat 20s

I think everyone's characters are up here. That said, if you want to modify or change your character I have no problem. Also, remember, you can take 1 or 2 blind shortcomings to get more power points to fill any short falls you have noticed.

Hope you are ready for a fight ... well they are drug dealer thugs, so maybe not a big fight but lots of fighters to knock about and try and duck their shots.

So you are on equal footing with the girls, here you go on the recent news. It is the handout they are getting tonight

Some is directly in play for both groups, some with them, some is in play for you only, and some is red herrings, Good luck figuring out which is which  But it is all to keep the world real and alive.

News 1 June 2018

International News

American forces with assistance for coalition forces and local military and militia are making head way in the endless war on terror – assistance from local Michigan Army NG and Air Guard units over the last year have been vital.
Afghanistan leaders, along with newest American Ambassador, complain of harsh tactics used in E & S Afghanistan over the previous year – New CG will review policies and rules of engagement. Regional SOF command point to relaxed ROE and renewed focus on finding fixing & destroying ISIS and Taliban forces (in Mid East and Afghanistan) as key to overall success. Specific policies (under review) put in place over a year ago by previous CG – USMC with SOF background instead of convention military leadership.

Local community news

Estimated 22 Veterans a day commit suicide & 20% of homeless are veterans, Federal VA is working with local NPAs Aid groups, churches businesses and city/state leadership to improve condition of local veterans. The Federal VA has begun to implement a more direct and hands on service to local veterans, and it is not limited to only VA Medical activities.

Government & Politics

Nathan Williams – local entrepreneur – has joined race to fill State Representative seat vacated by John Witt (disgraced representative under investigation of bribery and multiple other Federal charges) ; opponents claiming nepotism and Williams family attempting to build a political family dynasty; Nathan claiming it is absurd, his is distant cousin to other Williams in politics (1 State Senator, 2 other State Representatives, 1 Judge, and others in various levels of local and state government).

Business

Crime

In last 6 month the number of home invasion (by burglars or by relatives of the victim) have increased by nearly 70%. Mostly petty theft, but alarming increase of theft of prescription drugs (not just opioids and pain killers)

Regional Police academy graduated most recent class of cadets. Will help in filling shortfall of local police and deputy sheriffs. Still is a 20% plus deficit of law enforcement.

Sports

Local youth recreational sports complex nears completion. Is over $3 Million. Opponents claim boondoggle. No need for such large complex, wistful in designs (including raised platforms for video / news, misters, and excessive lights etc). Complaints of poor planning and design – water runoff inadequate and in places is reversed grade causing shallow standing water at edges of the complex.

Society Entertainment & Gossip

Loyd Wolfe – USMC Lt Gen (R) – completed move back to his home town, 20 miles NE of the twin cities. In 38 years of service held multiple commands including CG of near east forces. Says proudest command was MAR SOC forces in Iraqi invasion. Earned multiple awards including Silver star (Iraq & Afghanistan), Bronze Star with Valor in Panama invasion. Was a graduate of University of Michigan ROTC program. As said “What society needs, what America needs and what the military needs is more men & women with a little bark left on their chests … I have never met a Marine or soldier that was a success that didn’t first show their metal in sports …” He has set up a foundation that will offer 10 scholarship (5 for boys 5 for girls) per year for under privileged at risk youth that are involved in community and in sports.

The twin cities community entertainment fellowship is happy to announce the season for “Music in the Parks” has returned. Various locally supported music and performing arts venues will begin as weather permits. We all look forward to performances of classics, modern ‘electric classical’, blues, jazz etc and excerpts for great plays under the stars for the community, friends and family.

Technology
...

Religion

Regional members of the Muslim Rights Association (MRA) open latest private religious school, is 4th in the nation funded by MRA. The MRA schools focus on academic success with modern technology while maintain fundamental teachings. There is a rigorous screening of the students and their families to attend the school. Additionally, the MRA will provide multiple scholarships to other high quality private schools and higher educational facilities for under privileged Muslim children who do not qualify for attendance at the private school.

Local religious and community leaders are coming together to work towards an inter/intra faith alliance to assist the local community with a united focus to the various societal problems. Members of multiple local denominations and faiths have been active in the alliance, though the MRA is slow to attend and support the group. Additionally, opponents – mainly the Atheist Association of Business-persons and Concerned Citizens – claim the alliance’s methods and views are exclusive narrow minded and misguided. The alliance has begun to work hand in hand with other nonprofit originations to support homeless shelters and food kitchens, and give assistance to local needed veterans.
