Demons & Devils

Post by Snoring Rock »

Hi, I am new here. I picked up the Players Hand Book and the Monasters and Treasure books at GenCon. I was looking through the M&T and noticed no demons or devils. Is there another book? Or is everyone using those out of the MM from 1e?

There are some demons and devils in the Monsters and Treasure of Aihrde book. These baddies though are not the typical Orcus, hezrou, etc. For those stats, perhaps you'll want to stick with another monster source. However, IMO, by taking a look at the demons and devils in the Monsters & Treasure of Aihrde, you might get the idea that the normal D&D demons are a bit under-powered compared to how C&C does theirs. That's how it seems to me.

Welcome Snoring Rock.

Welcome to the Crusade, Snoring Rock!

Pretty much what Omote said, but I would consider looking into the 1st or 2nd Edition AD&D demons & devils - in 2e, they are called baatezu and tanar'ri, respectively, in case you have no prior experience. They work quite well, in my humble opinion.

Welcome!

Search these forums for some devils and demons that aren't in M&T of A and those are pretty sweet too!

There is a Crusader back issue with demons and devils as well, which is basically a summation/recreation of the AD&D variety, if one were interested. However, I don't remember which one they were in... maybe the author, sieg, does.

Omote, I believe we played together in Jon Hershbergers Caverns of Thacia Friday night at Gen Con. Good times! I am new to C&C and taking it in slowly. I started with AD&D and the blue box basic set back in the day. I skipped 2e and picked up 3.5e and am currently deeply involved in Pathfinder. I am finding higher levels as the DM getting difficult. More and more and more complicated spell rules and add-on feats. It just gets too long to run a battle. Balancing adventures after level 12 kind of sucks too.

So, how hard is to convert on the fly using 1e material?

Extremely easy: subtract AC from 20 (so a negative gets added), assign Primes, and done.

Snoring Rock, my man! As Serl mentioned about AC, it's just that easy. Also, if you are familiar with the mechanics of 1E pretty well, after a few games of C&C I guarentee the conversion process will be completely easy, and you can do it on the fly. Many C&Cers just pick up a 1E modules and run right out of the book only converting stuff then and there.

I wish I had played some C&C at GenCon. I was able to view a game shortly, but playing would have helped. I have to learn on my own. I took out my old MM and was comparing monsters in the M&T. Looks like a snap really. Not sure if it is age or me, but with all of thisw Pathfinder/3.5e in my head/blood, it takes a while. But the mechanics seem basic and straight forward. I love the options in 3.5e but I think something is lost in all the rules. It does not feel like the old D&D. And AD&D had its own set of problems. I just need to get my group to chesk this out. They looked at me funny when I purchased the books a GenCon.

So, using old mods looks to be a snap...any advice for someone with a lot of 3.5 material? I use the Wilderlands by Necromancer Games. I understand Treebore uses it as well and he converts other modules.

Tooting my own horn. (Gas Masks Apply) I believe I threw some demons and such into "Deeper Darkness' module.

Later

A while back I posted a series of Devils and Angels based closely on real medieval folklore and mythology. They should be easily retrievable by a search of this site, or my blog, The Engine of Oracles. The Devils I wrote up are pretty close to the actual lore, so they might not all be suitable for pulp-based weird fantasy, or Tolkienesque high fantasy. They're perfect, however, (IMHO) for historically-based, or gothic, campaigns.

The common Devils are:

Accuser Devil: http://engineoforacles.wordpress.com/20 ... ls-lawyer/

Corrupter Devil (Sabbatic Goat): http://engineoforacles.wordpress.com/20 ... atic-goat/

Craft Devil: http://engineoforacles.wordpress.com/20 ... l-artisan/

Luminous Devil (Fallen Angel): http://engineoforacles.wordpress.com/20 ... ous-devil/

Pact Devil (Black Man of the Crossroads): http://engineoforacles.wordpress.com/20 ... rossroads/

Seducer Devil (Incubus/Succubus): http://engineoforacles.wordpress.com/20 ... eval-lore/

Tormentor Devil: http://engineoforacles.wordpress.com/20 ... tor-devil/

Wrath Devil: http://engineoforacles.wordpress.com/20 ... ath-devil/

Snoring Rock, here's a link to some info on converting stuff over from d20. It's pretty reliable. You'll soon find that you can convert stuff on the fly, it really is that simple.

Welcome to the Crusade!
