Power Gamers

Post by Lord Falcon MacGreggor »

I have tried to preview my problem, but when I Discovered an error, it sent me back to this screen where I have to start over, I appologize it you have to read it again . . .

Some time ago I sent a forum to the `group`about a problem that I had, and I had a collage of responses about it, which were very helpful, and I thank you.

Since then, my technological capability has expanded, but my problem remains almost the same... Moriarity 777 was one who had some of he best advice for me at the time, and I grant that that was nearly a year ago. Now I have nearly the same question, but I game sessions in the effort to help me with my problem. What must be understood is that these videos are a *.mov file that my windows XP professional system will not recognize, and I have to view them with Vista on my laptop.

What I need to know is: the following . . .

Can . . . . . . and how . . . do I upload these videos, which are 5+ GB in size, so that people who are willing tto watch 6 hours of a game session, can help ,e deal with a powerful player, both experienced, and controlling, yet unaware of his power.

Please excuse the grammer, but as I try to correct the typing, my system hase gone into an overwrite scednerio, and I am unablr to get out of it to correct my failings. . . . Otherwise I would have made my point mych more concicely. . . With much less clutter.

As one DM to another if after a year of trying to play with someone and you didnt either fix the issue or get used to it and enjoy the games anyway"IE its still a issue".

It's time to realize that you and he have differant tastes in RPG's and styles and stop trying.

It does suck when it happends but there are some people who just shouldnt play together. if he is a friend stop playing rpg's with him and start doing something else. Make game night a boardgame night! There are lots of awsome games out there that a rpger would love!

Sorry I have no other advice other than that. Sometimes knowing when to give up is hard to do.

I think after a year ...you are not going to change him and he has not changed you.Time for some other type of fun.

...or, as I've done before: figuratively smack the 'power-gamer' in the

face with what he/she is doing -- every encounter, simply state, "With

your awesome abilities and powers, you succeed in what you're doing.

You don't need to roll, we'll just figure you hit and do full-damage. Now

what do you want to do?"

It doesn't take long before Mr. Power-Gamer realizes this is not

any fun, not role-playing, and BORING.

To me, "power gamers" are those who do their utmost to maximize every

possible advantage and minimize/eliminate any disadvantage. By taking

this and running it to its over-the-top conclusion, the player realizes that

it ain't no fun -- and/or the other players are quite vocal in making this

point.

Or... realize that Power Gamer style play is 100% fine and fun IF you like it. Also that other styles of play are fine and fun if you like them.

Trying to get a die hard power gamer to enjoy a deep emotion filled role playing activity is just as hard as trying to get a pure in character player to shut up and place his mini on the map and roll his attack.

In this case after a year the DM is still unhappy with his friends power game play and im pretty sure the power gamer would say the game lacks a lot of things that would better suit his tastes.

Is funny though as I know one of my players was told something very much like it. His reply was "something like ...Find a DM who isnt a pansy a**e and who can sling some dice and let a fellow enjoy making orc Shum!"

Again.....if you cant come together and at least have fun...do something else. Don't try to change him.....it doesnt work with chicks and men who abuse..it aint gonna work here either.

Yeah, after time and expereince with "issues" of many kinds i am of the same train of thought.

If a gamer doesn't "fit" with the desired style of game, and cannot or unwilling to adjust in order to fit, there is only one thing to do.

I have an issue with power gamers and passive aggressives. But I would rather deal with a power gamer willing to engage in the game ANY day over PAs.

I have had "issues" at the tabl and spent months trying to fix or address those issues. As a result everyone else at the table, and the game overall and my own sanity suffered.

Long story short it would have been better to nip it in the bud and deal with an awkward, "Thanks but no thanks." Than to dread each game and end it feeling frustrated.

There should be an application in Vista called Windows Movie Maker. You'll need to use it to break your videos up into 15 minute chunks that are less than 2 GB a piece. At that point, you can upload them for free to Youtube.
