Mutant Animal

I converted the D20 Modern Mutant Animal race by Jeffrey Moore to C&C. The system for creating the mutants is very similar to the TMNT/After the Bomb RPG by Palladium games. I may expand it with more animals and/or a ninja class. The layout may also change, as I'm not sure yet if I'm happy with it. If anyone finds any conversion biffs, typos, or such; please let me know.

And was just going to post my own version of a human-animal hybrid PC race, as based on mythology and folklore! Your version is definitely "crunchier" than my treatment is, and much lighter in tone. A somewhat different take, but a good one. I will probably still post my treatment on my blog, however. Good work!

Looks good. Yours definitely has quicker character creation and it fits better with the medieval fantasy setting.

Are you planning to do some rules for Lycanthropes too?

Thank you again. Your version has more options for character building, of course. Part of what I want to do with my folkloric conversions is establish baseline reference treatments of the actual lore, so that other gamers could know what the legends were really like, and use that information to create original work that resonates with mythology. I actually don't expect too many people to use the material "as-is", simply because so much of it implies a particular kind of setting that isn't to everyone's tastes.

For example, my version of the Therianthrope doesn't allow a player to play a PC with an animal head or wings, because I assume a medieval society were such a monster would be killed the moment it tried to step into civilization. In some campaigns, however, it would be a viable choice.

That's an interesting proposal. One of the things that became apparent the more I researched the medieval lycanthrope legends is how very different they are from modern movie werewolves. In medieval lore, people become werewolves by means of black magic (whether by use of a piece of fur clothing, an ointment, or an incantation), or else they are cursed to become an animal (in which case they don't always change back). Periodically turning into an animal based on moon cycles, passing on lycanthropy through a bite, or having a vulnerability to silver, were generally not part of the medieval legend. All are basically modern additions to the lore, and come from linking lycanthropy with insanity and disease. Once were-wolves started to be thought of as lunatics, they became linked to the popular belief that the full moon drove men mad. If lycanthropes was a disease, it could be passed on through a bite (like rabies). Since silver actually has disinfectant properties, it was the natural choice to kill diseased monsters.

I have done treatments for the traditional skin and ointment used for animal transformations in medieval lore.

It includes pictures and pretty decent descriptions. I thought about stating them, but i put so much on my plate that i don't have room for any more right now.

For the Lycanthropes, I usually run them as a disease transferred threw bite, with weakness to silver. The disease makes sense, as i believe I once heard of a real disease similar to it, but not as extreme. A folklore curse and/or black magic style Lycanthrope would be interesting. I'll check out that link, thanks.
