The whole "lawful stupid" never made sense to me either. I could lay out my thoughts on it, but I think there is an image that sums it up well.

Which would be?

I would say Batman is not lawful anything. Good, yes, but not necessarily Lawful. That is flying blue Superdope.

[And I edited the "cannot post a picture" posts away. You can hyperlink an image by entering its URL as plain text. It does not need to be embedded.]

Batman is almost impossible to place because of his very long history and many writers. In some cases, he's practically just a one (or two-man) SWAT team, acting on behalf of the Mayor and the Police department. In those cases, he can be called Lawful without too much problem. In others, he's against pretty damn near everyone, enforcing his own code of justice and morality, regardless of the laws or anyone else's conception of laws.

You more or less need to point at a Batman (usually within context of an editor or author) and say "Here, he's Lawful" or "Here, he's quite clearly Chaotic."

Yeah, I see what you mean. Most of my experience reading Batman would place him more in lines of the "I'm chaotic" group, which is how I like Batman to be... more vigilante than servant, in a way. Seems to make it more heroic, to me.
