Monster Saves: alternate methods?
Monster Saves: alternate methods?
The simple P/M monster save mechanic may be quick and easy, but I find it a bit too lacking in believability. The idea that big and clumsy creatures like the owlbear or hill giant enjoy a Dexterity-as-prime saving throw seems a bit silly, for example. Does anyone have alternate methods for saves? Does using the Fort/Ref/Wil dynamic from 3e work?
In cases where the saves don't make sense I just reassign the "primes" to where they do.

Since its 20,000 I suggest "Captain Nemo" as his title. Beyond the obvious connection, he is one who sails on his own terms and ignores those he doesn't agree with...confident in his journey and goals.

You could always use the Fort/Ref/Will saves, converted from 3.5, but they'll be a little overpowered in my opinion. It might be better to just assign a penalty, as CK, to an instance of "unreliability" in the save dynamic (like in your example of the fireball vs. owlbear). I'll cut the save in half, usualy, when I don't think the bonus for a particular save makes sense.
