Old School Sociology

Post by papercut »

Got a chuckle from this, taken from Kellri.blogspot.com:

The old school gaming movement wouldn't be, well, a school, without a whole bunch of cliques. Some of whom really don't much care for each other. As with any up-and-coming scene, everyone wants to claim to be the first, or if not that, they want to at least influence the direction things take in the future. I won't name names (I might like to work with some of those people one day) but I can run down the 'salient groups' as I see them...

(1) Grognards. These guys never stopped playing the same game they started with in the 70s. They don't need or like anything that they couldn't pay $200 bucks for on EBay.

Habitat: Often seen blogging about their 30 year old Greyhawk campaign and offering intermittent and esoteric rules advice on Dragonsfoot.

Typical Quote: Why do I need (insert retro-clone here) when I still have Gary's handwritten pre-OD&D notes in my wallet?

Natural Enemy: None. He'd need Viagra to get that worked up, and besides, he just doesn't really understand online communities.

(2) The Boys in the Pub. Not quite as old as the grognards, but with more than a healthy respect for the Great Gone Gygax. Can't afford the investment needed to go-old school, so they managed to whip up their own retro-clone.

Habitat: Often seen posting definitive stylistic manifestos on message forums and selling product on Lulu.

Typical Quote: Go eat a bowl of cocks, 3tard!

Natural Enemy: The heretical, and artistically challenged Trolls Den.

(3) The Troll's Den. Pot-smokin' hippy lawyers with printing presses. Feted the Great Gone Gygax with ghostwritten glory before his untimely demise and their untimely loss of license. Their dreams of a back-engineered AD&D crumble along with their revenue.

Habitat: On the fringes of ENWorld, Dragonsfoot and the Big Purple.

Typical Quote: That's an illegal copyright violation. Why? Because I'm a lawyer, and I said so. Play my game instead. Why? Because I wrote it.

Natural Enemy: The crude and amateurish Boys in the Pub.

(4) The Northern Fringe. Outsider gamers who've jumped on the bandwagon too late to gain acceptance into one of the cliques. Can't support any retro-clone largely because they weren't involved in writing one, and they hate those people anyways.

Habitat: Cranking out 3-staple 12 page booklets on their HP printer at home while extolling their own eccentric virtues on their blog.

Typical Quote: I'll ship it to all 6 of you as soon as I can afford another ream of A4 paper.

Natural Enemy: Another blogger or internet blowhard, often a Boy in the Pub or maybe a Troll, who's chewed him a new ass online.

(5) The Celebrity Blogger. Hipsters who couldn't care less what game they or anyone else plays as long as they dig that retro-cool thing.

Habitat: On their blog, replying to comments on their own or other hip blogs. rarely seen on forums as they just don't have that much chance of personal exposure.

Typical Quote: I like Elmore AND Otus. So there!

Natural Enemy: None. Too self-possessed to think for a minute anyone doesn't like him - well, except for the Grognard that keeps sending email death threats.

(6) The Naive Gamer. Regular Joe-the-Plumber types casually scoping out the old-school scene online.

Habitat: Big gaming forums, asking innocent questions that turn into brutal 50-page flamewars.

Typical Quote: I don't understand these Edition Wars. We all roll dice, right?

Natural Enemy: Hapless prey to all of the above.

(7) The Master Bakers. Ex-employees of Strategy Game Regulations before it went belly up. Personal friends, or enemies, of the Great Gone Gygax.

Habitat: Dragonsfoot, holding court in their own personal Q&A thread.

Typical Quote: My good buddy Gary once said to me....

Natural Enemy: Mortality

(8) The Terrible Twos. Fervent proponents of SGR's 2nd Edition. Consider older editions primitive because they lack a skill system.

Habitat: Dragonsfoot, looking for people to help 'update' {insert retro-clone here} to 2nd edition.

Typical Quote: 'Stop calling Ed Greenwood a pretentious pervert you guys!'

Natural Enemy: The Boys in the Pub, who flame them at will.

P.S. If you can't find yourself in one of these cliques - that's a good thing. It means you're probably doing too much gaming to care.

Ah, yes. Typical. I'll go with being a member of several of those, and at the same time, none. Yay for simplistic rendering!

Though, there was a mild chuckle. Once.

To think that all this happens over a game that is essentially about killing things and taking their stuff, and which was never meant to be used in-depth for anything more than that without some thick books of houserules.

Much agreed with the original poster - sit down, throw dice, have fun

I'm number 2, except I own a copy of OD&D. I'm number 3 except I refuse to associate with EnWorld and Dragonsfoot. The "Big Purple" I occasionally read when I want to do a bit of research on a game I own OTHER than Dungeons & Dragons.

Very funny!

I'd say I belong to primarily the 'Boys in the Pub' (Not quite as old as the grognards, but with more than a healthy respect for the Great Gone Gygax. Can't afford the investment needed to go-old school) but also socialize among 'The Northern Fringe' (Habitat: Cranking out 3-staple 12 page booklets on their HP printer at home).

C&C is my game system of choice nowadays, but given the chance I'd play or run B/X D&D or Classic Traveller. We tried OSRIC, and I was reminded how convoluted AD&D is, and that what I played in middle school was CALLED AD&D, but was actually B/X D&D with AD&D features (classes, races, spells, to hit charts, etc).

Exactly . . good point. Many of us are all of them, yet not really any of them - or mebbe some of them!!
I think.

Heh, anyway ~ I don't always agree with Kellri, but I like much of what he posts and writes. He's got a wicked sense of humor at times and makes many good salient points.

I thought I was a member of a school but each school I find plays by rules that don't apply to me.

I think I have come full circle to realize the past is only a memory and all we have is the now.

I find nostalgia as passing an interest as the flavor of the month.

The only thing I find sacred about any game, are the shared experiences at the most recent game.

My nostalgia I have found to be biased by rose colored lens and selective memory.

My flavor of the month gets manipulated by color art and packaging before I realize it's just vanilla...again and again.

My game of choice is the one the group happens to be playing at the moment.

For me cliques are just a way to separate people into false categories.

I don't fit into a group, which is something I was trying to point out in my previous post. I simply am...and that's the bottom line because Stone Cold said so!

I play what I play the way I want to play it. No 'salient groups' required. I started role playing games over 32 years ago. I belong to the group of senior RPGers!

Ah, jealousy. Its such a terrible thing. I can't believe these hapless toerags still can't stop talking about TLG. ^_~`

Sure sign of continued success when gadflies are still buzzing.

Oh...your one of those guys.
Sometimes a more accurate reflection is to bounce it off your buddies.

If everyone laughes and points at you when a word is mentioned...you may just be guilty regardless of what one thinks of themself.

Some friends did just that at a party a while back. Someone said something about not being afraid to share an opinion and everyone just had a hoot laughing at poor ole Joe. I must say, I resembled the comment.

I'm not sure why everyone agrees my dwarf from Snow White is Grumpy either. i mean i could be a Doc, or a Happy...right?

I don't like cliques for a few reasons.

1. I've been out of high school for a long time.

2. The various cliques I have been exposed to as an adult tells me some still long for the days of high school.

3. I thought I would find a home with some "schools" but my experience with the various game related forums and their respective cliqueishness has left me with less than pleasurable experiences.

I enjoy TLG because I feel a part of a community rather than a school or clique. A place i would prefer at in my phase in life.

After reading peter's post I am guessing I am missing some of the historical reference but it wouldn't be a first.

I have gone full circle looking for a game that fits me perfectly or has the "best" rules. Now I am content for rules light, good times with good friends.

I have found some games accomodate that more than others.

I'm not sure what school that places me in.

The Rock says know your role and shut your mouth! :p

There is no need to worry about what group you are in, we are all friends here. The only thing the Trolls are concerned about is your level of love for Dr. Pepper. If you be a Mr. Pibb drinker, and proud to day so, your days of welcome here are numbered!!!

I think I'm the Naive Gamer for 2 reasons:

1. Don't ever say 'Carl Sergeant' on Dragonsfoot and...

2. What the hell is "The Big Purple" ? ...seriously...

I can answer the second question: RPG.net.

For soft drinks...I prefer Mello Yellow myself. Dr. Pepper/Mr. Pibb both taste like Cherry Coke to me.

And...watching male soap operas (i.e. professional wrestling) is a useful diversion when you haven't got crap to do.

Moutain Dew is the preferred drink at our gaming table, though I do miss Jolt for those late night sessions.

Hahahaha! Sorry for the thread necro, but that's farkin hilarious! Eh, as for which clique, yea, I'm with the 'all and none'. Besides, I'm always the weirdo that wants to play stuff no one else wants to, like a Druid or a Monk.

Don't know where I fit but as I've grown older I've come to prefer rules lite games to run , such as C&C, various Retro-Clones , Rolemaster Express & Cyberspace or Cyberpunk 2020.

I do play in a regular RM2 game , have started in a on-n-off BtS & upcoming Firefly/Serenity game using Eden Studios Universal System. So I don't mind playing newer or rules heavy games, just not running them.
