Runequest, sigh....

Post by Jyrdan Fairblade »

Let me say that I never played Runequest back in the day....

With the recent revival by Mongoose, I picked up the core rulebook, screen, and the Glorantha setting book. They had me with everything, until I got to the combat section.

Does it make perfect sense? Yes. Is it convoluted beyond what I'm willing to put up with? Yes.

I might as well be playing 3e with this thing. I'm relatively fine with complexity in RPGs, if it's logical, concise, and good. But combat has to be simple and fast to run. I don't think I'm spoiled by C&C, entirely anyway. I'm fine with Warhammer 2e's combat system, for example.

Ah well... Runequest, we could've been good friends.

I did the same thing, except the Glorantha part. I do intend on buying that, since it is a great setting, and I collect settings almost as addictively as I do modules.

At least it has a couple of ideas I'm looking to steal for my C&C.
Since its 20,000 I suggest "Captain Nemo" as his title. Beyond the obvious connection, he is one who sails on his own terms and ignores those he doesn't agree with...confident in his journey and goals.
Sounds obvious to me! -Gm Michael

I was excited about the revival of RQ as well, VERY EXCITED! Unfortauntly I picked up the books and started reading them at GenCon... in my estimation, RQ doesn;t really resemble RQ of old. That is not always a bad thing, but I think that Mongoose really didn;t capture the spirit of the RQ game was. I will freely admit though that I only spent like 1 hours reading the material available. That was enough to convince me not to get into the game.

Same here, about the disappointment, I mean. The game to get to have a simple easy to run to game for BRP is Stormbringer 1st thru 4th editions. It is to BRP and other percentile games what the RC and C&C are to D&D and other class/level games, IMO.

MRQ has a bad case of six steps back and zero steps forward.
