Old School Retro with my C&C

Post by GameOgre »

One of my players and I love old school retro rpg's. LL,BF,DD,S&W,WB Ect..

I love to read them. I like to print them out and slip them into binders with plastic protecter sheets. I don't know why, I just do.

From time to time I think about running them but .......C&C just works just as well for me. why change it if it isnt broke? I get that same old school thrill from my day to day game as I would one of these. In fact I buy pdf's for LL or download adventures for BF and just run them with C&C.

To me there isnt much of a differance maybe because i don't add any of the more 3E type rules to my C&C game.

Last night I ran Fortress of the Mountain king as a C&C adventure and it was tons of old school fun.

I guess just a friendly nudge for any of you fellow old school lovers that there is a pretty nice collection of easy to run C&C adventures out there cheap or even free that you might not think about.

I feel the same way. Part of me wants to switch systems every game just so I can flip through those old books I dig, but C&C covers everything pretty well and most of the non-core stuff I can drop in from Rules Cyclopedia or AD&D, giving me a nearly equivalent experience.

At the end of the day, I need rules I can remember and keep straight, and with the state of my brain these days, that means playing one game only.

I with you on this one. I play and/or run games that use alternate house rules/3E type rules, etc. I also play in a game that is 100% BTB with no additions. This game is just as fun as the other.

I like the retro style games just fine, but C&C has everything I need. I've thought about switching from time-to-time, but C&C is just too perfect to change from.

Yep, I have been checking out all the OSR stuff, and most especially the adventures. I have yet to run as many of them as I would like, but of the few I have run, including several of the freebies offered over on Dragonsfoot, I have had fun with all of them, and most importantly, so did my players.

Plus I have found many of the rule books to be worth reading, they often have just the right kind of thought behind them to work really well not only with the rules it was intended for, but with C&C too.

Just with the state of my mind these last 10 or so years, if I don't write careful notes that I take the time to go back too, I don't remember them nearly long enough to use them. Which is OK, it gives me an excuse to read them again.

I switch between C&C and S&W a lot. It depends on how I want my game to feel at the time. I like both systems equally and the only fault I find with either is a lack of spells for casting classes. Compared to 1e AD&D neither system has the complement of spells I like to have in a game.

I find that since the 4th print came out I've not been bothering with Castles & Crusades as much. Even the Gray Book, which truly IS a clone game, isn't tickling my fancy. I know that lately, I've been looking through other games I own, and as of late, DC Heroes since I happen to believe it to be the best superhero system ever produced. In general though, games simply aren't holding my interest at this point in time.

I think I know why, and if the reason why is what I think it is, my presence would be a millstone about the forum's neck.

C&C is inherently "old school"/retro in it's mechanics (rules), but so many CKs uber house rule starting stats! Not that I'm against that, as they will tend to compensate and adjust the opposition/monsters for equality.

But, if a CK uses the BTB rolls . . for attributes, HPs and starting gold ~ you get old school to the MAX.

I'm running the C&C boxed set rules for my group and have allowed 1 character rolled up with some house rules to see how it played out. That char did kick ass over all the others.

And, I have run OD&D 2 times for my group and now I'm convinced that running C&C BTB is the way to go!!

[I'll never forget my nephew rolling a 1 HP when we ran OD&D . . he was speechless for (!d6 rounds) whilst we all laughed our ARSES OFF!!

I've been grabbing an adventure here and there - like everyone else, I love to read through them and envision how they would run...but with which system? I converted N5 - Under Illefarn to C&C and it ran really well - even though I despise the dwarven dungeon.

I also have The Sentinel and The Gauntlet that I am working on, along with a few other items I've downloaded or bought directly from the great folks over at Dragonsfoot.

And...there's the ton of adventures in my collection of Dungeon, issues 1-100.

So, I've no end of adventure ideas...my primary challenge is TIME! That and whether to convert to C&C or run 1E or Basic.

I won't say how much I love 2E for fear of being stoned...

I love 2E as well! I started with basic ect but it wasnt till 2E and playig it in the Navy that I got to put in CRAZY amounts of time playing. At Sea we would play it every chance we got and in port we would include our wives in the games!

I was on the USS Pennsylvania SSBN 735 and let me tell you, if us bubbleheads know how to do anything its play some 2E. At least back in the day anyway.

I just bought three Brand new 2E books,Players Handbook,Dungeon Masters Guide and Monsters Manual. Not a scratch on them and looking like thet just rolled off the press! All for $15 at a used Bookstore. They had a copy of 2E's Planes of Ravenloft Setting and several adventure books but all I had at the time was $17 .

I'm pretty much sold on C&C as my Fantasy Game of Choice but 2E will always hold a special place in my heart.

2E was my favorite as well, and I played in the Navy too, on SSBN 641 (G). We played a lot in port too.

You'r boat was a peach! Nice lines and built like a Pretty Lady! Looked like she could sweet talk and just pound the heck out of anyone that messed with her.

I'm sorry to read about her passing.

I was on the commisioning crew for the Pen. so i hope she outlasts me. It would be a sad day if I lived to see her passing. Too much love and blood in those tanks to for it to sit well with me for her to pass.

Ok strange and weird Sub momment over.....back to rpging!!

I've been looking into various OSR games such as BFRPG, S&W & DD PDFs , LL in print but have a hard time choosing one of themover C&C. I'll probally run C&C most times , occasional OSR pick up games & RMEx mini-campaigns. I've been seriously tempted to buy (or D/L free) OSR based modules/adventures & convert them to C&C.
