What rules did you not remember even existing?

Post by Treebore »

This is for us "old guys", meaning the ones who are old enough to have been playing, specifically, 1E AD&D.

I bring this up because my group and I had an interesting discussion disrupt our game for a bit last night.

There were a surprising number of rules brought up last night that my players, the ones old enough to have ever played 1E AD&D anyways, did not remember even existing.

Examples:

They did not know that magical armor bonus' were supposed to add to your saves.

They did not know there were stacking rules for Rings of Protection, etc...

Which brought up magical rings could stack with NON magical armor, but not magical, etc...

So I am curious as to what other rules people either forgot, or were never even aware of, being in 1E AD&D.

I know of a list of rules that were out right ignored, such as weapons speeds, weapon versus various armor rules, grappling, initiative, racial class limits, and others.

So have any others had similar conversations? What rules did you find to be forgotten, or believed to never even have existed, in 1E AD&D?

What rules do you think never existed? Maybe your wrong, and we can find out.

More as I continue to not use AD&D as my baseline.

Wouldn't people not be able to answer this question if they can't remember what they don't know they don't rememeber?

I am probably not old enough to answer because I didn't start playing 1e until after I got my red box Mentzer set.

But I'd say, besides the fine point Relaxo made, that I could scarcely have forgotten much, because I didn't thoroughly read the rules until a couple of months ago. We used the books as more of a reference.

Having read it again recently, I still didn't recall the rules you cited; without constant play using such things they aren't likely to stay in my head. Some people I know read something once and never forget, but too many years, too many systems, and probably too many killed brain cells for me.

Interesting rules you found though. Those who forget the rules are doomed to reinvent them badly, if I can butcher a quote about UNIX from Henry Spencer.

Rules? There were rules?!?
Never paid much attention to all the nuts and bolts. We had fun and played as we played. So safe to say, there is probably more than one that I never "remembered" having not bothered to learn it.

That there is a legitimate monster, listed in the Monster Manual, called the 'Masher'. It's like an optical illusion that it is listed, but never seen...

Ahh yes...the Masher. I remember it well. It got toned down quite a bit from its OD&D version in that it lost half its hit dice, did on average 8 hit points less damage, lost an attack, and lost its visual appearance. In OD&D the Masher was intended to be mistaken for a Purple Worm.

I was asking in case others have had similar conversations or realized through some other means what we discussed in my group. I doubted very many would have done it, but I was hoping for at least one other.

1/2 elves

Post by Wolfram_Stout »

I was re-reading my 1st ed. AD&D last year and was amazed that I have never picked up that the alignment distributin for 1/2 Elves and 1/2 Orcs were the same.

I don't have the book in front of me know, but per the Race entry in the PHB, a 1/2 elf was just as likely to be evil (or as good) as a 1/2 Orc.

No wonder they originally started out as outcast and untrusted.

Regards,

Wolfram

One that sticks out for me is how you are supposed to roll for exceptional hearing at character creation.

I remember that wearing a great helm added +2 to gaze saving throws.and fighters got an attack per level for creatures under 1 HD.
