Gary's works-Castle Zagyg

Post by GameOgre »

Can we write to her? Start a petition? I'm thankful to have what the Trolls were able to produce, but would love to see the rest get published, too.

You know maybe this would work. I think pretty much everyone concerned can now look back at it and realize that that whole mess did not work out the way anyone wanted it to.

No blame,no anger,no pointing fingers and no bad feelings. Just a love for Garys work and a burning desire to see them get into print so that we can buy them and have them in our games.

One of the hardest things for anyone to do is to go back after making a mistake and own up to it and do it a differant way.

Lets make it easy for her to do that by just being nice and friendly and show her we have nothing in mind other than a love for her late husband and a high regard for his works.

Maybe that kind of petition would work and finally let Gary's works have a chance to see the light of day?

As long as it is done politely it would also let her have and idea as to how well it will sell.

Since its 20,000 I suggest "Captain Nemo" as his title. Beyond the obvious connection, he is one who sails on his own terms and ignores those he doesn't agree with...confident in his journey and goals.

Maybe it would work. On the other hand, even if she is willing to give TLG her blessing to complete it, there is no guarantee that TLG will accept the job. But here's to hoping.

Well, I hate to be the negative one but even if it did happen, you still would need to get the 'head writer' on board for this. Naturally, I'm not talking about Gary but the other talented individual instrumental to the writing of the Upper Works -- Jeffrey Talanian. He seems to have moved on to other projects and frankly, I'm not sure if I'd be interested in seeing someone else tackle it.

Another great tragedy was the fate of the Yggsburgh series of accessories detailing the town. So many people had produced material for it, and most of it never published. Because of the state of affairs and the aftermath, none of it ever will either -- at least not the way it was originally intended or written.

Castle Zagyg as conceived while the license was under TLG's care is truly dead. Instead, we should cherish what was released. The initial Yggsburgh hardback (aka volume I) remains a great resource and thankfully not impossible to find. The East Mark Gazetteer was fantastic and many of us will cherish their signed copies and the Upper Works was a jewel.

It's a shame that those two last items are difficult and expensive to come by though and I would be in favor of seeing these reprinted. That said, I wouldn't want attempts to do any more without Jeffrey Talanian either. I think what might make a nice addition is something to bridge the Upper Works with some sort of suggested guide and perhaps a link to some of the materials found in the Halls of Many Panes.

But that's just me.

I would rather see Gygax's legacy be resurrected in the form of Lejendary Adventures -- the last game he created since Dungeons & Dragons and the many forms it took (and continues to take) already lives on...

I don't know, Jeff probably would not get back on board, but there are other people out there who would do Gary's notes enough justice to be worth while. I agree Jeff would be the most ideal, but I don't know if he would be willing to get back on board if asked. I would like to think he would. I am sure he realizes that decisions were made at a very less than ideal time in the Gygax families lives, when judgment was deeply clouded by deep grief.

I suspect if Steve did go to Gail and talk, they may end up having some surprising outcomes. I also bet if all those contributors were approached, and made to understand how deeply grief affected decisions made, they would all be forgiving and be more than happy to finish getting Gary's legacy into print.

Then again I may be expecting far more understanding from everyone than they are ready or capable of giving, but I would like to think the best.

Never say never, but I doubt the Trolls would be interested at this juncture.

They put a lot of resources into producing Gary's stuff and the pulling of the liscense probably left them in a tough spot.

Now that they've weathered the storm, so to speak, why would they put their own projects on the backburner again to return to where they were 2 years ago?

Working with Gygax Games was a mutually benificial arrangement, but I think the moment has passed.

At this point, I'd rather see the Trolls focus on Airhde, haunted Highlands, and siege engine variants.

I say . . build your own. I'm doing it.

Others have done it.

It's the old school way.

Gary would love it and encourage y'all to do so.

QFT.

I've been building my own megadungeon as well, freely stealing, er 'borrowing', ideas I liked from lots of sources, whether it be the Wilderlands, Castle Greyhawk (Black Reservoir, Old Guard Kobolds, etc), Stonehell, or Al's Beyond the Black Gate. My take on these bits, as well as my (more substantial) original bits, is quite different, of course. I'm attempting a more S&S feel - without the 'Mad Wizard' angle or much of the puns/humor from CG - but to each his/her own, right?

CZ:UW re-rereleased?? At least maybe? hundreds or a low four figure amount of people? want this product. That said(and if that's even correct), a lot of companies seem reluctant to reprint popular oop material because they lose the mystique of having that 100+ dollar ebay gem. Sure, they make no money from used items being sold, but maybe it's bragging rights. Whatever it is...seems to me Tri-Gee has nothing going on right now. Wish there was a pdf of Yggsburgh, and especiall UW. I own hard copies, but don't want to wear them out. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought I heard(from on high)that Gary didn't want a pdf to be made available.

Yep. Basically for pirating reasons.
