Homemade monsters

Post by Falinor »

I like to create my own monsters for my campaign. When I can't find a monster in M&T that I like for a certain setting, I create my own.

What are some of the monster that other CKs have created?

There are also a number of old threads that should now be in this forum that have a lot of monsters. I know serleran has posted a bunch and there is another poster who posted demons, devils, angels and a lot of others too.

I am totally blanking on their name too. I also thought I copied and compiled a document containing all of them, but I apparently did not back it up before my last HC crashed a few months ago.

Since its 20,000 I suggest "Captain Nemo" as his title. Beyond the obvious connection, he is one who sails on his own terms and ignores those he doesn't agree with...confident in his journey and goals.

I've come up with a few for the Harvester's game, but will be kept under cover for the time being!

Following is a link to my "Book of Wondrous Beasts", a PDF compilation of over 40 authentic medieval creatures, converted for use in C&C. The compilation also includes versions of some familiar monsters whose gaming presentations tend to vary from the medieval lore. Hint: DO NOT mess with Unicorns!

"A Book of Wondrous Beasts".

On my blog, "The Engine of Oracles", are also Angels, Demons, and Devils, directly inspired by folklore, mythology and legend. As Treebore indicated, they were also posted on these boards. I tried to stay as close as possible to the actual lore with them, so they might not be suitable for all campaigns. They are not conversions of the creatures from the SRD, but original takes on the source legends.

Enjoy!

Sorry...I see where the confusion came in.

That's a critter that belongs in every setting. It would be especially fun in Harvesters, though.

I like saying it, too. And, my players hate me now for bringing it into the game... just like they hate the wereberus (lycanthropic three-headed death dog ettin hybrid.)

That happened to me the last time I threw in nilbogs. I'm still waiting for just the right moment to introduce werehuahua to my unsuspecting party. Muahahahaha.

like the OP I find myself constantly creating new monsters when I don't find exactly what I want, or when my vision of something differs from the published version.

as an example, here's my take on the Formless Spawn of Tsathogga:
Formless Spawn of Tsathogga

No encountered: 1, but may subdivide

Frequency: extremely rare

Size: M

HD: 8-12 total HD, subdividable into 4HD sub-spawn

Move: 20'

AC: 15, although some spawn will use armor

Attacks: Buffet, 1d6 (x2), Crush (1d10)

Special: acid touch; immune to acid and cold; vulnerable to purify, Devour

Saves: P

INT: low

Alignment: CE

Type: alien

Treasure:

XP:

Formless Spawn are servitors of Tsathogga, and as such are found in temples or shrines to the chaotic evil Frog God. Formless Spawn take the form of noxious black sludge. The sludge can form itself into any shape, and if the shape is bipedal, it can walk and move in a jerky fashion. They can also form pseudopods, fanged mouths or any other nasty forms. Formless Spawn may also subdivide into 4HD sub-spawn, which share all the features of the larger Spawn (save for reduced HD).
Buffet: Formless Spawn can strike with their pseudopods (or limbs if in bipedal form).
Crush: if two pseudopods or two limbs hit the same target, they may link together and begin to crush their foe. The Crush damage is automatic the first round. In subsequent rounds the trapped creature must make a STR check to escape.
Acid Touch: the touch of the Formless Spawn is caustic, and will cause 1d4 damage per round or hit.
Immune to Acid and Cold: Formless Spawn are immune to acid and cold.
Vulnerability to Purify: A Purify Water spell will inflict 1d8 damage on Formless Spawn.
Devour: Formless Spawn will completely obliterate all organic matter if permitted to do so. Creatures slain by a Spawn will thus be devoured unless rescued by friends or allies.

comments or suggestions appreciated!

No sweat Todd, you earned it!

(I'm going to regret this)

If anyone's interested in slapping these all into a huge netbook, email me and I'll complie them all at some point in the next 4-8 months.
