Engineering Monsters

Post by GameOgre »

Wouldnt that be a kick a**e book to have on our shelves? Come to think about it I have never seen a creating monsters guide from anyone.

I realize that it would have a limited selection of people buying it(mostly Castle Keepers) but I know I would at least LOVE a really good book that went into the inns and outs of monster creation and some of its foils.

What to watch out for ....what works well as well as some other styles that we don't normally see.

A section on differant ways to make a monster Elite or A Boss type encounter.

Fast and effective mods to turn any monster into a heroic challenge!

I would pay good money for this!

Goodman Games has their "Random Esoteric Creature Generator", which is available in PDF from the usual sources (DriveThru, RPGNow, etc.). I've not looked at it for a bit, but there's elements in there of what you're asking for if memory serves.

The RECG is excellent. I just picked it up the other day and already it is indispensable.

Expeditious Retreat has a Monster making book...which is pretty comprehensive. Since it was written more for the 3e era, there is some conversion work involved.

Great idea GameOgre. A C&C version would be worthy.

I had done some preliminary work on something like that but shelved it about a year ago as I started other projects. I still have plans for 'something' though I'm less sure about the final format.

The title is/was "The Hunter's Bestiary" (tm).

That said, the RECG is a fantastic little book and I heartily recommend it!

Well even though I missed the boat on a monster book for other games I still think one for C&C is needed.

I don't see TLG churning out tons of Monster books. Why not put out a book teaching castle keepers how to best create there own instead?

Like the old saying about teaching hungry people how to fish so they can eat for life instead of giving them a fish to eat.

Well you know what I mean lol

Seeing as Monster books sell so well (For other companies) I'd be surprised if there wasn't another monster book on the back burner. Doesn't mean that the two cannot exist side by side.
