So, after our current 4e story arc is over, my group is talking about playing Castles and Crusades, with me as CK (because I own the books, and am considered a fun CK). As we were talking this out last night, someone floated the question of whether or not I would allow sorcerers a la 3rd edition. I have a basic plan for sorcerer-style casting in place for illusionists (as an option, not a requirement), but wondered if anyone saw major issues with extending that to wizards, as well, to create a "sorcerer" option.
The plan is this: "Sorcerers" trade daily flexibility for instant flexibility. Instead of keeping spellbooks, they know a number of spells equal to a wizard/illusionists base spells per day... i.e. they know 2 spells at level 1. They can cast those spells a total number of times per day equal to the daily allotment plus their Int bonus. Thus, a 1st level sorcerer with a 13 Intelligence (maybe Charisma) will know 2 1st level spells, and can cast 3 spells per day. They don't need to prepare, they just cast.
Now, I already allow free-casting of 0th level spells, so they're less of an issue, but what do you think? Would this provide an unnecessary hardship, or an overwhelming benefit, to sorcerers v. wizards?

I like that. Not going to use it because I like mine better, but I do like that idea. -Treebore, summing up most home designers' philosophy

It works the same as it did in 3E. Don't make it easy to change spells and it should work fine. So allowing them to only be able to change spells each time they level should be good.

Since its 20,000 I suggest "Captain Nemo" as his title. Beyond the obvious connection, he is one who sails on his own terms and ignores those he doesn't agree with...confident in his journey and goals.

Looks fine to me...but I'd not be allowing them to change spells at all. What they know is what they know innately...discovering how to channel their gift into a new spell (sort of like a talent) when applicable.
Are you going to let them ditch components as well...which seems most likely given the innate nature of a sorceror's magic. If so, that gives them a double benefit which the set nature of their repetoire would better offset IMO.

I don't tend to be a component hawk, except in the case of expensive ones (i.e. you have to pay that 100gp for identify, but I'm not going to ask how you're keeping the spiders alive for spider climb), so there's a bit less of a benefit there... but I might allow it.

Probably, for ease of play, I'm going to go with "Can change spells at level up."
