Dresden Files/Starblazers/FATE...

Post by Treebore »

I have owned Starblazers for over a year, and have known about FATE as a system for much longer. This weekend, at Neon Con, I finally got to play Dresden Files and Starblazers, which are both FATE system games, and I have to say, even though I have not fallen in love with FATE myself, I can see why so many do rave about it. It is pretty simple and works really well for those who like a narrative heavy kind of RPG, especially when it also does a good job of pulling the players into adding to the narrative.

So if you get the chance, even if you don't like the rules mechanics over all, I bet there will be a few rules ideas you will want to steal from it and add to the RPG you do like. Plus, as long as you have a competent GM, you will have a good time learning these ideas.

Since its 20,000 I suggest "Captain Nemo" as his title. Beyond the obvious connection, he is one who sails on his own terms and ignores those he doesn't agree with...confident in his journey and goals.

I was a playtester for Dresden Files and so I'm biased, but I think the game ROCKS! It really captures the feel of the novels. I sometimes run DF as FATE and sometimes just use the book as a sourcebook to run DF more as an OD&D-Modern.

If they put out a low price Dungeons and Fate basic game i would give it a shot. It seems like something right up my ally but the HUGE friggin books scare me away. I know they have a generic one I could prob use to make a D&F type game but I don't want to have to reinent the wheel with the rule set before I get my first game under my belt.

I think there is a free FATE PDF floating around somewhere. I'll keep an eye out for it.

If you have read, and like, the Dresden Books, I seriously doubt you would be disappointed with that one.

I wasn't worried about Starblazers because I got to talk to the creators at Gen Con 2009, so I knew it was sci fi that I would like.

Reading through this site you can learn a lot about FATE:

I actually hate the fudge dice, so I use the 2D6 version when possible.
