XBox 360 vs. PS3
I was thinking about getting an XBox 360 (on sale after Thanksgiving) and thought I should check to see if any experienced users have a preference between it and the PS3. I heard that the XBox 360 had some mechanical problems (red ring of death?), but that those problems have been fixed. Any input would be appreciated before I flush my hard-earned cash down the video game drain.

Yeah, the current 4 GB X-box works awesomely. The PS3 is still over priced and only offers better graphics and some PS3 exclusive games. Plus as I understand it no backwards compatibility, which is why I switched to X-box. If they had backward compatibility I would have stayed with the PS system.

Since its 20,000 I suggest "Captain Nemo" as his title. Beyond the obvious connection, he is one who sails on his own terms and ignores those he doesn't agree with...confident in his journey and goals.

I love my PS3 but I have never played a X-box360 so I might love that to.

I'm a PS guy. I would obviously go for PS3. PS3 DOES have backwards compatibility with PS1 games...just for the record. If you can get your hands on one of the original PS3 releases, they do have backwards compatibility with PS2 games...but they are no longer on the market and going for stupidly high prices.
Current PS3's cannot play PS2 games.
Xbox360's still have the red ring of death. I have a friend who is on his 4th xbox 360 and another who had (I think he has) at least new ones given to him by MS as replacements.
That aside, these are what I see the strengths and weaknesses of each system
Xbox360
Most Xbox games are compatible with it
Biggest game selection
Most PC games that are released are also released for the Xbox360 these days (that can be a downside as well if you are a PC gamer...as there is overlap)
Great Graphics
On the badside it probably will be outdated in two to three years when it get's put out of production and the new Xbox comes out (some say as soon as next year).
Easy to hook up
Better internet functions and multiplayer functionality
More first person shooters and action games
PS3
Better graphics capability (at least until the new Xbox version comes out soon).
Is supposed to have at least 6-8 more years before it's lifecycle is up
More Japanese RPG games that you can play
More Japanese games period focused on the PS3
Backwards compatibility with PSONE games, if you can find them (FFVII, FFVIII, FFIX, Chrono Cross, the entire FF run for PS1, etc.)
More exclusives to the PS3 (but not more than the Wii)
You can play Blu-Rays, DVDs, and DVD/CD's that you burn that have Avi, MPEG, or DivX (and I think MP4) files on them.
Overall it depends on what you want out of the game system. If you are a huge Japanese game buff, you want the PS3. IF you are a big action game buff, you want the Xbox360. If you are big into online multiplayer, Xbox360 has the most time tested and largest online mp audience. If you want media options, PS3 is the best.
I personally like the PS3 better, but that's because I'm a PC gamer as well, and my PC kicks the Xbox graphics and online capabilities by a mile any day of the week.

I do not yet have either, still content to play with the original PS2 and XBOX (not XBOX 360, even), but based on the store tests... I would probably go with the PS3 because it seems to be
1) faster
2) cleaner (graphics are usually crisper)
3) game-able (that is, when I want to find a game for it on the shelf, I can)
4) functional (can do more stuff beside play games, which is important to me and my region specific DVDs that would otherwise require me to hack my player)
But, I have a Wii now, too, and its OK. The puppy likes to play with it...

PS3... simply because it plays Blu-Ray disks. I've come to the realization that I suck at video games and really would rather work on and play tabletop games.

So do I, and I am not impressed with blu ray anyways.

I opted for an XBox 360. I'm finding the learning curve on Halo Reach to be quite steep. I keep fumbling with the controls while some 8-year-old punk runs up behind me and kills me in some form of hand-to-hand combat. Oblivion is going much better.

Sounds like something my 8-yo nephew would do as he plays Halo LOL . He does it all the time with me if I'm not in a tank or something LOL. Whack gah my guy goes down. That is unless we are playing my Halo 1 or two I own him then LOL.

I try not to support monopolysoft whenever/wherever possible, so I'm leaning towards towards the PS3. I've been happy with the PS2 and since I've been looking at Blu-ray players, I most likely will buy the PS3. Just waiting for the right price!
