Venison in the Freezer

Post by Piperdog »

I've been doing some deer hunting up here in the frozen tundra of Michigan. Got a nice size doe so far, but no buck sightings. My eldest son, 15 years old, went out with me and was really excited .....but seeing the deer shot troubled him. He said he felt sad and the feeling surprised him. I told him I would be worried if it didn't bother him a little; that any spiritually healthy individual will feel that connection with another living creature. I told him, like my father told me, that we are to revere and respect all life, that we only take what we are going to eat. Once I told him that our Native American ancestors prayed to the spirit of the deer and thanked it for it's sacrifice, he sort of understood the big picture a little better. Well, off to bed....going back out before sun up again tomorrow. Night fellas.

My wife would hunt me down if I went hunting, unless I brought the whole back and made a car out of it or something.

Sounds like you had fun and grabbed some yummies... so, yay!

Archery just ended here and rifle doesn't start until after Thanksgiving. But I've still got some venison left from last year. Good luck Piper.

Had a friend that got married in October - On the opening weekend of deer season in GA. Needless to say, they never celebrate their anniversary on that weekend.

I bet he brought the deer rifle on the honeymoon.

I've got deer round steak and antelope sirloin tip in my freezer. But it looks like possible snow this weekend, so probably won't be grilling!

Hehe, no the weather does not scare me, but because of the cold - it takes my grill quite a while to get grillin' hot and I don't like to waste so much fuel.

But no worries, I just waits 'til it warms up a bit.

I think, I've got a best thought for venison. It was on the fact that the grilling might be a good issue. I could try to deal with another factor.

Good luck with the hunt. Next year I'll be out in the woods doing my best to bring home the first fresh venison my wife has ever had ...

I've got one more day to bag a deer before I have to wait for flintlock. Then it's down to the nitty-gritty.

Go Rigon! I don't have a muzzleloader, though it is on my wish list. I just made some venison chili last week, and mixed about 1/3 of it with Jimmy Dean sausage (HOT). Turned out awesome. The first night, I served it on white rice with shredded cheese on top. Delicious.

I got a .54 cal from my dad a few years back when I started hunting again. I haven't gotten a deer with it yet, but here's to hoping.

As for preparing venision, my wife fry some venision loins in butter, garlic and onions in a cast iron skillet. Talk about good eats.
