Bullrush = Charging Overbear Attack?

Post by Demiurge »

In 3e our group made liberal use of the bullrush maneuver. Overbearing is in the same spirit but without allowing movement of the defender on a successful attack.

To simulate a bullrush I'm thinking of allowing a charge to add +2 to the overbearing check in place of the +2 damage it does for a normal charge (with the -4 AC for the attacker also in effect).

Anyone else allow something similar?

Sure, but there are very strict requirements, like being stronger and larger than the opponent. In very rare situations, a smaller creature could "bullrush" something, but they'd have to be known for being vicious and tenacious.... its not every day a goblin can push over a storm giant.

I also do not keep these things written down... if someone wants to try something, I make up the rule for them. Every situation is different so I don't consider a single rule plausible to cover my needs.

We found by doing 3Eish thing (like bullrush) we just ended up arguing on how the effects should work in C&C, and discussing the topic ad nauseum. For the most part we just stick to the combat manuevers listed in the PHB. Sure, it doesn't cover every situation, but it works pretty well. When the time came for PCs to want to push enemies back (and off a cliff). it became a simple strength Siege Check modified by size and the usual modifiers. Every point the PC beat the check by, the enemy was moved back 5' (to a maximum of the normal move distance minus what the PC already moved this round).

Fair enough. I don't really think it needs to be a printed rule either. My mind just starts envisioning things that could unfold and planning for them.
