Saving Throws?

Post by Snoring Rock »

Ok, so I just started playing C&C. My group wanted to test the sytem so we had several encounters at different levels. We had a red dragon in one, where I chose an adult (18HD). So if the save were a prime (12) and the dragon has 18HD the save against breath would be: 12 + 18 = 30. Is that right? It makes sense I guess. After all, the damage would be 18d10. Stands to reason the save would be heroic. So what if the dragon were ancient? Say 34HD as listed in the Monsters & Treasure? 34HD + 12 = 46 to make the save. If not a primre then 52. Am I wrong here?

The original intent behind dragons was to use their Age instead of HD. Some will think that makes them too weak. I would agree and disagree. Even on a made save, suffering 9d10 (or more) damage is not a "good thing." That may have been changed. I don't know, nor do I care. I don't use Monsters and Treasure (since I have my own stuff -- I might use kobolds and some of the more generic things, but never the big baddies.)

Snoring Rock, you got it! And now you also know how terrifyingly devestating dragons are in C&C!

Well that fits in the overall power of the Wildrlands Campaign. The dwarves of the Vastness lost a city to a dragon and her young, and are still 400 years homeless. Using Pathfinder, you cant understand why the dwarves did not just march up and take it from those pesky dragons. With C&C.....its stands to reason.
