A game system designed just for kids....
I was roaming around the net today and I came across this game system that is designed for kids
http://www.firefly-games.com/catalog/pr ... e62eb322d1
Here is a PDF sample...

I'm wondering if anyone has heard anything about it. I've used C&C with my kids, but my youngest one and even the middle child (8 yrs) aren't capable of grasping concepts and rules so I for the most part handle the character sheets. This works out perfectly, but now I'm thinking I would like to have the oldest one read a book and get into role playing as a DM. This Faery's Tale system seems perfect for that, and it's probably not violent.
So has anyone heard of it? Any comments?
Thanks

I've heard of the game, but only in name.
At my local FLGS, there is a guy who is actually running a CAMPAIGN for this game! I heard there isn;t a big turn out for his games, but he does a few ladies and a younger child playing in his game.

The game I find to be the best for children to grasp is the one based on what they watch the most....
Toon!
Oh, and I know if I had kids, I would not like the LARP aspects of the above-linked game. I don't encourage dressing up and acting out being something or someone you're not, unless its for a costume party or Samhain. Children have enough "reality" issues to contend with...

Do you know what kids watch these days? Even though I have a strict control of what they watch, it still shocks me to see the crap available to them. They don't really watch the same things I did when I was growing up. As for playing a toon, I guess if there were a game out there for that purpose, then it would merit me looking into. As far as I know there isn't.
I've always wanted to get them into RPGs and did so with C&C but still it's too difficult for them to grasp at their age... rules wise. I'll check this one out.
Oh... about the LARPS... I wouldn't want my kids to jump off the roof thinking they could suddenly fly, but dress up is a big part of growing up. So I don't think I would stop them but I wouldn't encourage it and would definately monitor it. At the moment, I'm just looking for P&P RPGs for kids.
No, I have no idea what kids watch anymore. I gave up my TV watching (save for one show, and that's on weekends only) in the mid 90s when Barney and Power Rangers were "the shizzle." Toon is a bit more complex, perhaps, but if they just know to "pretend you're Bugs Bunny (or whoever)" it shouldn't be that hard. Though, the cartoons I'm used to are violent... more so than the movies I watch, and they are gore-infested. Anyway... the game looks interesting, anyway, and its got stuff by Robin Laws so its not totally whacky.
Oh, and Toon! is for playing a cartoon character. The thing to fear the most is the eraser, ink, and other "artistic devices." Out of print, I believe.
[Edit]
Yep, out of print:

Jynx, I have an 8 year old who plays C&C and grasps it just fine. Given time and practice they eventually get it, though admittedly on the adult's part it takes a fair amount of patience to give them enough chances to pick it up. Stick with it.

Yeah, kids vary. My daughter was a "rulews master" at the age of 9. My youngest still isn't a rules master, but a couple of months before his 10th B-day he finally "got" the importance of knowing the rules, and started learning them. Plus doing his basic math mentally has jumped leaps and bounds in the last 6 months or so. Adding up damage dice has been a great incentive, plus adding bonuses, and most of all, keeping track of his gold, silver, copper, etc... and converting one from the other.
So I say be patient. When your kids ready, they will advance.

Since its 20,000 I suggest "Captain Nemo" as his title. Beyond the obvious connection, he is one who sails on his own terms and ignores those he doesn't agree with...confident in his journey and goals.

No... but by following the links I found a detailed, actual play review on RPGnet
Reviewers score:
Style: 4 (Classy & Well Done)
Substance: 5 (Excellent!)
"An excellent game not only for kids, but for anyone who feels the slightest bit jaded at the whole hobby of gaming. Bring me your jaded, your weary, your rules-lawyers yearning to be free, and harken back to a simpler time."
After a time, slowly introduce bigger concepts sprinkled with a little CnC...

I will have to take a look at this. My kids are still quite young (nearly 4 and almost 2), but I'm always on the lookout for ways to introduce gaming concepts.
My daughter (the eldest) and I already do free-form "Cinderella Stories" in which we collectively co-create the plot on the fly. And both my daughter and my son dig looking at pictures in my gaming books (the more G-rated of those anyway).
We also have worked out a "Mermaids RPG" that works in a pretty freeform manner, but have only played that once. I'd encourage anyone who's really into looking for games for their kids to have a look at the YahooGroup that's dedicated specifically to that:

Basic D&D or one of the updated versions like Labyrinth Lord or BFRpg...simple rules leaving lots of room for creativity on the part of both player and GM. Worked for me as a kid way back when and it's how I plan to introduce my son to this wonderful world. I think it's also a wonderful intro to a more developed system such as C&C (and the history of the game...or their parents involvement in rpgs...if that is of any interest to the kids)...

I'm in the same boat as you. My sons (6 and 3) are a little too young for an rpg, but I'm feeding my oldest son a lot of fantasy: watching fantasy movies (Willow, the LotR movies), watching the D&D cartoon, and he loves looking through my copies of A Practical Guide to Dragons and A Practical Guide to Monsters. Now that he's reading, I'm always looking for even more ways to get him more exposure to the fantasy genre.

My 6 year old plays C&C just fine. I keep her with easy classes, mainly the basic Fighter, Wizard, Rogue and no real complex stuff. I have been considering the collectors box or C&C basic but the books work fine. Also my wife plays along and can do the more complicated stuff.

AD&D per se is as dead a system as Latin is a language, while the C&C game has much the same spirit and nearly the same mechanics. --Gary Gygax 8/16/06

Interesting. That's good to know. My wife, bless her heart, looked at the D&D Basic (Red) box and saw "10 and up" on it and proceeds to tell me that we need to wait until he's 10 to start. I think he would be good now, but I compromised and said 8. I just don't want him to get "too cool," or interested in too many of today's kid pursuits before he tries it.

Here's what I do:
For the Kid I allow only Fighters, Rogues and Wizards. This is a good basic start point and easy classes to learn with. You'll note that there are no clerics on the list. That is a personal preference since adding in religious themes seem to further complicate things. (Also in my game there are no clerics and the single 'god' of the world acts from a distance)
The kid also has a basic understanding of how things work and my wife can help choose spells and/or abilities to use. We also go less story and more combat/dungeon crawl since that holds her attention better.
My wife plays the more complicated classes and can play two PC's of needed to beef things up as well as me running some hirelings. It has worked well and both like the results. Also it feels like when I started playing and has been fun.

I have a rpg for kids that I've been working on. If anyone would like to playtest it and give me feedback/suggestions, I'd be glad to email you acopy of it.
