Freeport Companion
Just wondering, has anyone gotten the 'Castles & Crusades: Freeport Companion' from Green Ronin?
Is it good? >.>

Re: Freeport Companion
I have seen posts by people who bought it, and I remember them all being positive. I own most, not quit all, of the D20 Freeport, and to me, with C&C, Freeport is Freeport is Freeport. Meaning I find it so easy to adapt such material to C&C I don't see the need to buy a conversion.
But since your interested in it, I am pretty sure you will be happy with it. We already know the content is awesome, its just pre converted for you.
I do remember a couple of things being pointed out as still being "D20" rather than C&C, but the vast majority of it was properly done.

Since its 20,000 I suggest "Captain Nemo" as his title. Beyond the obvious connection, he is one who sails on his own terms and ignores those he doesn't agree with...confident in his journey and goals.

Re: Freeport Companion
Thanks for your opinion. I've been thinking of getting the rules-free Freeport book... I play 3.5 and I soon want to start a C&C game as a CK, so that book would be good either way. Sadly both system companion books (3rd and C&C )seem to be only in pdf, as they only have printed versions of True 20 and Pathfinder.
I welcome any other additional feedback.

Re: Freeport Companion
If you already have the "material" don't bother buying another version. A D20 version works just fine for C&C. Now if you don't have the material at all, then yeah, edition neutral may work best, unless you want class versions to convert.

Re: Freeport Companion
I ran a two year Freeport CnC Campaign. I think the $13 PDF is a bargain for the critters alone, never mind the new races and magic items. It's been my mini-"CKG" for a while. The version I have still mentions feats in the firearms section, but I just made that a Dex check. The product came out before the 4th edition, so none of the NPCs have a class and a half.
Overall, I'd give it 4.5 stars out of 5.

Are the critters, races and items "new", or were they new to you because you don't have the original Freeport material?anglefish wrote:I ran a two year Freeport CnC Campaign. Re: Freeport Companion
New to someone who didn't have the old stuff. While it's not hard to covert on the fly, it's nice to have it done already. I thought the CnC Pirate class was good. The Noble seemed to depend on if your group was going to focus on urban and politcal adventures.
On a personal note, my Freeport game was a "drop in" into another game world. If I run it again, I'd rather try it with the "Continent" supplied in the rules-free guide.
Regardless, between the CnC Companion, the rules-free guide and running the original d20 trilogy, the PC had enough connections and history with the town that the game almost ran itself as we played out the consequenices of the actions. It didn't hurt that the party was the type to stir thing up either. LOL!

Re: Freeport Companion
I got the C&C Freeport Companion a while ago, just to see how it went with some of the Freeport d20 stuff I had. I most interested in the Firearms rules they had in there. Much more deadlier than the Castle Keeper's Guide stuff and pretty extensive for the blackpowder era.
I'd say it is defintely a win if you want to get it.

You can get it printed out and spiral bound at Staples for about $20. I finally broke down and did this with the AD&D 3 books and have been very happy with them.

Re: Freeport Companion
But this is where RPGNow could really make some money and put that new Print on Demand stuff they have to good use. Green Ronin has several books that are PDF only, and with M&M 1e and 2e going OOP, they (along with C&C Freeport) would be a good thing.treant_on_fire wrote:*Grumbles but agrees....*Treebore wrote:treant_on_fire wrote:But they only have it on pdf. Re: Freeport Companion
Take advantage of the medium, print only what you are going to use. I've never needed the sanity rules, thus they never made it to my Campaign folder.treant_on_fire wrote:But they only have it on pdf. X_X
The same folder where I have select monster stats xeroxed from three different books that stay at home instead of being lugged around and breaking my back.

Funny thing is Green Ronin, has placed the Savage Worlds Freeport companion into RPGNow's new print on demand system, but not the C&C version of it. Wonder if a few email requests to Green Ronin would get them to add the C&C version into the pod as well.

Resurrection spell!
I just bought this, and I'm very pleased. I left some comments on drivethrurpg that might be of interest to anyone who stumbles across this thread:

Also, FYI, Office Max will charge about $13 and change to print and bind, FedEx Office about $15 (according to their respective websites).

Re: Freeport Companion
Reading it right now... Thyrion Lannister has certainly made the Noble class look interesting! xD
I'm thinking it could be used to good effect in a Class and a Half actually.
(Btw, despite my comment, no spoilers from the novels please!)

Re: Freeport Companion
Just bought this one too. I'm trying to decide if it's worth purchasing The Pirate's Guide to Freeport as I tend to gut campaign settings for their tone and mechanics, rather than using the locales and such.
Re: Freeport Companion
I love the pirates guide. Its great for the locations and people. There are no mechanics in the book. That is where the companion comes in.Wasgo wrote:Just bought this one too. Re: Freeport Companion
Ok, so quick question. If I buy the C&C Freeport Companion will I get pretty much everything that is in the setting neutral "Pirates Guide to Freeport"? Is there any reason to have both if I already buy the C&C conversion or is all the content repeated? Thanks!

Re: Freeport Companion
I think the Pirates guide is the fluff, and the Companion is the crunch.
this way, Green Ronin has 1 fluff, and several flavors of crunch for each system supported.

Re: Freeport Companion
Ok, Relaxo,
So to be clear, there's not much or any duplicate content? Buying them both makes sense? My fear was that the setting neutral book contained the fluff whereas the setting specific included that same fluff (or much of it) as well as crunch. I just don't want to buy 2 books of 50% of the content is the same between them. Hope I'm making sense.

Re: Freeport Companion
There's almost no overlap between the two. If you want the "whole" setting book, you need the Pirate's Guide and then the companion of your game system of choice (e.g., C&C, SW, etc.). The Pirate's Guide is all the setting-neutral info on the city; the companion is just the crunch you need to run it in your system. It's all great stuff - highly recommended.mbeacom wrote:Ok, Relaxo,

Re: Freeport Companion
You're quite welcome. I liked it so much, I bought the Pirate's Guide in both dead-tree and PDF form, and the companions for SW and C&C.
Out of all of that, I think my favorite single thing is the C&C companion - even if you weren't planning on playing in Freeport, there's a lot of cool stuff in there.
