New Online Game Starting in March

Post by Demiurge »

I'd like to start a new game up sometime in March. We'll be using Skype, but I haven't decided if I want to use a virtual table. My current though is to run it every other Sunday evening opposite Nate's game, in which I am a player. I'm EST and would like to start at 6 - 7PM and run for 3 or 4 hours. Newbies are very welcome. Heck, this is my first time running an online game so I'm not exactly a Grognard at it. ;)

I'll be running it mostly by the book with a modicum of house rules, which I'll post soon. The setting will be a very sand-boxy home brew. We'll start in a fairly defined area and build the rest as we go along with players encouraged to provide setting details.

Let me know if this is something you'd be interested in.

Good luck with this! Wish I could join yet another game, but not only am I already in a lot of games, I am already in the game opposite of Nate's.
Since its 20,000 I suggest "Captain Nemo" as his title. Beyond the obvious connection, he is one who sails on his own terms and ignores those he doesn't agree with...confident in his journey and goals.

Yeah, I knew that going up against Rigon's game would be tough. Like you, I'm in several other games and that's the only free spot on my dance card. :D

Hopefully this will allow some folks who are new to online games and C&C in general to jump in. I've already got a non-C&C player from one of my other groups interested.

I will also speak to the wife and son (who game but I am converting to 'old school' games) and see if they wish to try some onlineness(new word?). What length of time are you looking at on Sunday nights?

House Rules

Post by Demiurge »

I will be following the rules as written with a few exceptions:
  • * Character Generation: 4d6, drop lowest, arrange as desired.
    * Characters may be re-rolled if they do not have net bonuses of +2 for all abilities combined.
    * Maximum hit points at first level. For all subsequent levels, use the number rolled or half the hit die type, whichever is higher.
    * Reach: Combatants with reach or reach weapons may attack opponents as they are approached immediately, regardless of initiative. This attack counts as their action for the round unless they have multiple attacks, which occur at their normal initiative.
    * The CK reserves the right to allow player actions that would otherwise have no chance of success but would prove to be grandly thematic or just plain fun.

Campaign Concept

Post by Demiurge »

For this campaign I want to try something different. Play will start out in a small fort guarding the beginnings of a town on the outer reach of a kingdom. The rest of the world will be defined as the characters interact with it.

Players are heavily encouraged to assist me in naming and describing locations, geographical features, NPCs and even gods. I will reward players with XP for any that I use and they will be added to the campaign wiki.

I will be doing the same thing in my upcoming face to face campaign set on the same world. Things defined in one game will gradually be woven into the other.

My hope is to have the characters truly invested in the game world. Most of this can be handled out of game, but feel free to chime in during play with a suggestion.

A last note. If this isn't your kind of thing and you just want to kill monsters and take their stuff I'm OK with that too. ;-)

I'm interested in getting into C&C. I recently tried D&D 4e and quickly got tired of it. It was way too MMORPG for me. Are you taking total newbies? I'm more interested in the fantasy roleplaying and fun encounters rather than flat out dungeon crawling. I'm EST. Sunday works for me. 7 better than 6 (someone has to feed the kids. :) ).

Best regards,
TheFink

You are absolutely welcome to play. I just got home from a 4 day gaming con bender and will get some more details up this week.

How does March 13th at 7PM EST sound for a start date & time to everyone? I can move it to March 27th if that works better for those interested.

I'll be using Epic Words for a campaign home, so please create an account there (free). We'll also be using Skype so a headset is strongly suggested (speakers and a mic can cause echo). Please send me a private message with your email address and Skype ID.

I've decided to go without a virtual table for now. I play in a couple of campaigns that don't use them and we rarely run into an issue. We can always add it in later if we all decide it would be beneficial. Dice rolling will be on the honor system.

Please post your character concepts so I can get an idea of party composition.

Demiurge, you are not, technically, going up against my game. You are offering another spot for those interested in playing C&C to get a chance to play. ;)

Some friendly advice, I find that Skype games tend to bog down when there are more than 5-6 players, so you may want to limit your spots. You may want to use some kind of "table top" if only for posting maps. Other than that, all I can say is good luck Keeper!

Since I am in the AST (which is EST +1, 8 is at least an hour too early for me, as you know from Nate's game, I have my little girl to put to bed. If you are fine with me joining in late, then start whenever is best for you and the others.

My preference if I play (will run it by my wife) is to start on March 27. Again, personal choice (based on a lot of traveling my wife and I will be doing (for work trips) in the next 3 weeks.
Again, whatever is best for you and the others.

I can't promise making all the sessions due to my daughter, so if others want in and attendance is solid, I'll step aside for others to try c&c out. No worries :)

Ditto what Chuck said about the number of people making SKYPE wonky. I as well suggest to keep it at 5-6 max.

In terms of the maptools, I strongly suggest using it, even if just for showing maps and doing basic macros rolls for stuff. I always use it, never run into any issues, but they are basic compared to Nate's maps :) I just use it to drop a map or 2 down, along with a few tokens for critters and some basic macros. Thats was enough for me and my players.

The 13th at 7EST sounds great to me. I'm assuming this is every other Sunday? I'm not sure what kind of character I'd like to play. Just not a fighter. Maybe a rougue or something. I should know more once I get the players handbook today/tomorrow.

I'm stoked!

27th is during GaryCon, so I will not be able to make that evening. Starting on the 13th should be fine for me as long as missing the 27th is alright with the group.

That's OK. We can either have someone run your character or he can sit it out, whichever you prefer.

You had mentioned your wife and/or son might play. Will they be joining us or will it just be you? I want to try to keep the party at a max of six so I can keep everyone involved. If it will be 2-3 of you we can skip the 27th.

Also, let us know what you're thinking of in terms of a character.

Will get with them both this evening and lock down yes or no, and figure out my character preference. Thanks.

*edit* Texting is a wonderful thing - Wife is a no. Will get with son after school (he better not be texting in school!)

I agree with the above both in terms of size of group and virtual table. The tricky thing about group size is you have to get a handle on who is a regular attender. 4-5 Regular attenders is about right.

As for virtual table, you are quite right that there are technical annoyances fairly regularly but I find maptools makes the game run soooo much smoother and faster.

Without it, things like area of effect spells, or how the 3 ogres line up vs the 5 PCs gets very vague and requires discussions. Even with the technical hitches, I could not see any of the groups I am in going back to chat only.

Have fun with it folks!

So when will we have a final count of who's in? I should decide which type of character I'd like to run this weekend. Or, if everyone else has strong preferences, I can pick something to fill gaps. I'm thinking mage, illusionist, assassin, or rouge. Too many options! :)

My son would like to play if that's alright. Again, wife was a no this time around, so that would be 2 of us. If the group is alright with it of course. If so, we will decide on characters and roll em up hopefully this evening.

What's the deal with epic words? Is it something we must post on? or is it just for the CK to keep tabs on the campaign? So many internet sites, so little life left to give them :)

Thanks.

Epic Words is a real nice site. You can post campaign updates, character journals, send out reminders/rsvps for sessions, etc. The only think I ask is that you register there and post your character. I can then invite you to the campaign. That way if someone needs to run your character or I want to check it between sessions it's easy to get at. That said, if you keep a character journal and/or help with the wiki I will give out XP awards.

It's fairly intuitive, but if you have any questions give me a shout.

I thought I posted this earlier, but my PC must have eaten it.

OK, so here's what I've got for confirmed players:

*TheFink
*sajflorida & son
*2 players that don't post here
*1 or 2 folks I'm giving a few more days to get back to me
*LordSeurek, if the two above back out.

I will find out what the 2 that don't post here want to run and let you know. I like to run (semi-)heroic campaigns so I prefer no evil characters. Neutrals are fine as long as they aren't disruptive.

Looks good on my end. I'd rather see some new people try c&c out than play myself. But, if #'s are a problem, I'll roll up. I never give up a chance at gaming if things work out on my side.

Son (who has registered and will post tonight) is leaning towards Dwarf Fighter, but I'll let him post.

I am leaning towards Wizard.

More to be posted later as we work through it.
