New to C&C, a few questions...

Post by Ozreth »

Heya! So I'm a 3.5 player who enjoys and appreciates elements of every edition of D&D. After reading a bit about C&C it sounded too intriguing to pass up, so I went ahead and ordered the PHB : ) I've got a few questions while I await its arrival...

1. I have read that it resembles AD&D with a few of the streamlined elements of 3e thrown in. Does it have any of the 2e feel? Or just 1e? Also, how much of the rules are of TLG's own creation?
2. Does gaining levels take roughly as long in C&C as in AD&D?
2. Are the 4th printing books %100 compatible with all of the C&C printed in the past? I'm assuming so since people say one of C&C's strongest points is its compatibility with most d&d products.
3. Are their guides for converting C&C stuff to work with 2e and 3e D&D products? I'm sure it's pretty simple to do but I've never been to keen on conversions.
4. Why does the CK screen cost so much? :(

Thanks guys!

I can answer question number 2, as that's come up for me. The changes for the 4th printing are a free download, so basically the 1st printing books are 100% compatible once you factor that in.

There was a link (I think somewhere on the Troll Lords site) that gave the basic conversion guidelines. It's pretty straight forward.

Do you refer to the collector's boxed set with the digest-sized books. If so, that's(if I'm not mistaken)more of a throw back to the old mid 70's D&D set. As I understand, it's quite playable, but not the full rules and options of the phb and monsters and treasure. As for the price of the screen, I won't speak for TLG, but it does include a 17 page adventure...The Golden Familiar. Also, stunning art work by TLG art director Peter Bradley, and a pretty comprehensive array of game-related information(with all of the latest 4th printing updates). Welcome aboard.

Thanks guys. Thats a pretty simple conversion guide, I like it :)

I don't doubt the quality of the screen (although I do wish it were shorter and thicker cardstock), but $20 plus tax and shipping seems a bit high when they price everything else so well. I'll be picking it up regardless ;)

I believe I have an extra. If you're interested, I'm sure we can work something out.

I should have the book in hand this week, let me give it a read through and I'll most likely be shooting you a PM by the weekend :)

C&C feels like AD&D, but plays more streamlined, quicker and so much less clunky. C&C feels like old school in every way, but with none of the baggage.

As for adding in elements of various editions of D&D, it works seemlessly in most regards. I have personally added in elements of 2E and 3E and it has been a joy to do. It just works! I think many of us around here have done so, and there are certainly very few who say this is problematic.

Awesome, I'm excited to get this book. Does the monsters book to a good job at replicating your staple d&d baddies? Beholder for example.

No Beholder since that wasn't OGC...but there is a critter called the Prismal Eye that is a lot meaner in the eye department.

Yeah that's what I meant, I know they can't use the specific monsters, but was hoping they could do decent impersonations, and it sounds like they did :)

TLG CEO and janitor, Stephen Chenault, has greatly desired(since 2009 at least)to produce a stronger, sturdier screen. He owns one or two, but they were cost-prohibitive. TLG does their own printing, so give them time. Maybe they'll find a way. Give Stephen a 2-liter Dr. Pepper, and the creativity will be unleased, much like Hendrix on hallucinogenic drugs. :-)

That makes sense, I'm sure they'll get around to it. Hopefully it's just like the 4e screen (which I converted to 3e). Best screen ive ever seen or held.

Anybody have stats or a pic of the prismal eye?

Prismal Eye
Stats: More badder-asser than the Beholder ever was.
XP: Skip any party the Prismal Eye is invited to.

If you want to fight the Prismal Eye, you had better get yourself the CKG and have those class levels 13-24 in hand!

It's based on HD modified by a value for abilities. Overall, Xp awards for creatures tends to be less than D&D, but are offset some by treasure rewards if you use it IMO.

Welcome Oz!
Here's all you need to konw on Prismal eye
# attacks: 2
Damage: half your hp / the other half of your XP

(stole that joke from http://www.dungeonbastard.com/ ).

C&C is fun. At first read you may say, "hey what about {rule}" and "but isn't {system} missing?" and after trying it a little with an open mind, you see you didn't need those rules and systems and they just slowed everything down and added unfun dice rolls and books and rules lawyering. less rules, more fun! IMO at least. Fewer limits, the default is 'YES" not "you need another feat/power/skill/ etc... so that's fun.

I think it's fun, did you catch on to that? LOL

again, welcome aboard! Converting from other (not 4th) editions is a snap, really, so all your books are "still good". the hardest thing is switching feats and such into class powers and the lower bonuses... someone has posted a solid guide, search and it should come up, and you'll find that everyone here is really friendly and helpful.

Finally read through the book and must say I like what I see. I've written up a bit of a review on my blog if anybody is interested (http://www.yeoldeblog.net). I'm super excited to start running a game. Gotta get my hands on the CKG as well :)

If you read the review and find any glaring mistakes please let me know! I've got to proof read it one or two more times as well as add some images, but the bulk of it is there.
