SQUID, GIANT

NO. ENCOUNTERED: 1
SIZE: Large
HD: 12 (d8)
MOVE: 6 ft., 40 ft. (swim)
AC: 17 / 13 (see below)
ATTACKS: 8 Tentacles (1d6 each), 1 Bite (5d4)
SPECIAL: Grapple, Ink Cloud, Weakness
SAVES: P
INT: Animal
ALIGNMENT: Neutral
TYPE: Magical Beast
TREASURE: 6
XP: 950 + 12/hp

These creatures are more aggressive than their giant octopus cousins, often attacking prey for the sheer fun of it. They never attack with more than eight of their ten tentacles, reserving two for leverage and movement. As a rule, they only strike at any single target with one or two tentacles, the latter reserved for large creatures. Their bodies are covered with a hard shell (AC 17), but their tentacles and heads are softer (AC 13).

Grapple: They will often attempt to grapple (as with 18 Strength) and then either strike prey with their powerful beaks or simply constrict them (2d6 damage per round).

Ink Cloud: If a giant squid is reduced to half or fewer hit points, or loses four or more tentacles (see below), it will attempt to flee. In order to aid its escape, it will emit an ink cloud about 20 feet in diameter, reducing visibility within to zero.

Weakness: A giant squid’s tentacles are vulnerable to slashing and chopping attacks; 8 points of such damage will sever one (possibly freeing a grappled opponent).
