Non-C&C books you use (or intend to use) for your C&C games

One of those 'just for fun' threads...

- Book of Iron Might (In this case I think I'll just take it out when a player mentions something too specific for the default rules and tell them what the drawbacks are on his turn/attack instead of letting them 'shop for moves')

- The Wurst of Grimtooth's Traps. (One of my favorite OGL books actually. I received some advice on my 'XP for Traps' thread that I'll make use of for this.)

I use AD&D 1e DMG and D&D Rules Cyclopedia when there is a gap in the rules.

Just setting books pretty much. We have used 2nd edtion Greyhawk stuff from Greyhawk Players Handbook, and The Adventure Begins.

i use
AD&D, all of the books. Some monsters some spells couple weapons
HackMaster, all of the books.. i ported my campaign from HM to C&C.
I also on occasion use 3 party supliments. like Role-Aids.
Some basic D&D stuff. monsters mostly
Classes, races and the like off the web..

Basicly i use what i like from alot of sources.
Please don't beat me.

Previous to CKG, hirelings, for example. I still find the spell explanation section useful. I use Appendix P to help make high level characters. In Rules Cyclopedia, usually the spells section; having different versions of the spell descriptions available is often helpful, but it's packed with information on all aspects of play. More than once I have looked across a timeline of spell descriptions to get to the bottom of how it was "supposed" to have worked.

I've probably used all of my AD&D 1e books to clarify something or use one of the many fine tables at some point. Dungeoneer and Wilderness Survival guides are particularly handy.

Of course Gary's 1e DMG...which I thought was the ultimate RPG
book until the CKG (I'd put them on a par, myself)...
and Fiend Folio and MM...and my two
Judges Guild booklets from way back: 'Castles' and 'Villages' which
have pre-mapped castles and villages on Xeroxable pages that can
be modified to suit. Hmm...and all my 1e modules I'm looking
forward to running again...Mwahh-Hah-Haa! :twisted:

In addition to my C&C books, I usually have the D&D Rules Cyclopedia, my old Judges Guild Ready Ref sheets book and GM screen, and my copy of Dave Arenson's First Fantasy Campaign. When I grab monsters or treasure I often just use whichever book is most convenient.

1e, 2e, and 3.5 DMGs, any monster source, anything Ravenloft, just about any adventure module and other various stuff. One of my recent favorites is the AD&D Dungeon Master's Design Kit. That thing is awesome.

3.5/Pathfinder for monsters and questions related to monsters, such as "what exactly is an aberrant?"

Lots of real-world history for all sorts of things to spice up typical fantasy settings. Sometimes truth is stranger than fiction!

People I've met, for evil NPCs

Shadowrun, for ideas on how other planes work as well as for summoned creatures

Games made by Yasumi Matsuno (most famous for Final Fantasy XII and Tactics Ogre), for more ideas on how to spice up typical fantasy settings or otherwise use fantasy elements that people take for granted in a totally different direction

Strategy games made by Paradox Interactive and KOEI for ideas on what's going on in the world while the party is off adventuring

The Oregon Trail 5, for ideas on what can happen to the party while they're travelling in the wilderness

AD&D 2nd edition, for when you really need to know the average price of a chicken in D&D-style currency

The Riddle of Steel roleplaying game, which has been a huge influence on how I think about fantasy gaming

Non-fiction instructional books, to get ideas on what could possibly go wrong with all sorts of things

And countless other unsubtle influences in all the monsters written up so far

I recently picked up the Swords & Wizardry version of the Tome of Horrors Complete (pdf) and I'll definitely be using that for my monsters in the future.

For some reason, I love using the Forgotten Realms Grey Box (1e) and the 1st Edition AD&D Forgoten Realms supplements (FR1 through FR6) with C&C. No Time of Troubles, no Cyric or Bhaalspawn, no dead and wild magic, no "every piece of world explored" BS. I ran a game based in Arabel, and it ran really good. Plus, knights make really good Purple Dragons of Cormyr! :D

Aside from those, I sometimes pull out the 1e DMG for the awesome miscellenia it possesses. I sometimes use Aurora's Whole Realms Catalogue, too, if the players want some more odd equipment. I also like the 1st Edition Manual of the Planes, for cosmology explanation. I like the Rogues Gallery (1st and 2nd Ed. AD&D) for some quick, on-the-fly, fleshed out NPCs. Other than that, I mostly stick to the C&C products.

All the AD&D hardback monster books to flesh out all my encounter tables.

The Arcanum rpg for all the nifty alchemy bits.

Various web resources for inspiration.

I use the 1e DMG, MM, Fiend Folio, and MM II for rules and monsters. I use Necromancer Games version (3.5e) Wilderland of High Fantasy for the setting and all of the JG books like cities, temples, vilages, and Sea Steeds and Wave Riders. I also use just about any edition adventures; 1e, 2e, 3.5, Pathfinder, JG, TSR, Fat Dragon, Necromancer Games....

Just thought of some other books I used for C&C. Literally "castles" and "crusades" play big parts in my games. I use the Osprey Publishing, Fortress series to give the players (and myself) ideas on how various castles look during the Crusader periods, and for the Teutonic knights, and various Cathar castles.

The Osprey books (especially illustrated by McBride) are full of awesome. Great for details on armor and weaponry.

I use the excellent random encounter tables from the 1st Edition AD&D DMG. Sometimes I use the 2nd edition Monstrous Manual as well. I have been getting useful information from purpleworm.org since it has the complete book of dwarves for my all dwarf C&C game.
