Just got Gods and Monsters not sure what to think
I just received my digest version Gods and Monsters. I have some questions. How gets the granted powers? Can you get the granted powers of multiple gods. All the granted powers seem way way to powerful. It is funny that the author refers to the Boxer rebellion and the ghost dance as the power of faith since faith did not help those warriors at all.
There are two novels that can change a 14-year old's life: The Lord of the Rings and Atlas Shrugged. One is a childish fantasy that often engenders a lifelong obsession with its unbelievable heroes, leading to an emotionally stunted, socially crippled adulthood, unable to deal with the real world. The other, of course, involves orcs.

Re: Just got Gods and Monsters not sure what to think
The After Winters Dark Cosmos book has some guidelines. First, granted powers are for clerics, and presumably would be for a single god only. The cleric has to take time out to train with the deity's chosen weapon, wear the deity's chosen armor, and follow a ceremony for the deity, with the penalty of losing granted powers if he doesn't. Taboo violations also have a penalty of losing powers. How all that works is something the CK needs to decide.
Of Gods and Monsters is a book that works best with a CK willing to do some extra work to fit the deities into his or her campaign world, or be able to adapt to abuses of the powers given. I'd suggest that a CK not adopt one-size fits all approach and instead tailor each deity individually, and set the expectation that these powers will manifest for the cleric when, if, and how the god feels they should at any given time, so behave as if they are always watching.
I've used the gods as written, too, and let any player of any class have the granted powers, and everyone had fun. It was for a one-off, though; many of the powers are too much for my campaign, but that's for each CK to judge.

You get the granted powers by being a follower of that particular deity.zombiehands wrote:I just received my digest version Gods and Monsters. I have some questions. How gets the granted powers? I expect if your game master allows it, you can have granted powers from multiple deities, sure. But, and this is just a personal opinion, that kinda defeats the purpose of the power of faith and all consuming devotion. These granted powers come to a devoted follower, not someone who's just playing at it.

Look at it from the point of view of the deity. To what mortals would you invest powers in and why? Why not?

Thanks guys but, I can't take credit for that line of thought. Gleaned from AD&D DM advice by Gygax & Co.
