C&C Ravenloft

Post by treant_on_fire »

I started buying myself some TSR Ravenloft books on eBay for my upcoming C&C game so it inspired me to start off this thread. None of the books have arrived yet but if anyone else wants to start discussing it, please do. :)

Always been a big Ravenloft fan. One of my funnest campaigns to run started as a Ravenloft game I planned using 1E. The players Tried to throw a cog in my works by making Oriental adventure characters. All samurai, At first I thought about saying no and making them reroll. But at the last moment I let it roll and instead let their battle ship sail into the mists and come out on a strange darkened shore. Its now referred to as "The Samurai in Ravenloft campaign". Some 15 years later its still talked about now and then.

Well, I could see a game where you mix Ravenloft and Oriental Adventures together... :)

But yeah, in your case you meant having these samurai types in a setting unfamiliar to them. Sounds pretty cool! :D

I second that. It's games that do something different that really get players to remember.

I've actually never ran a Ravenloft campaign, but without my players knowing it, they went through many adventures form ravenloft. Also, as the ravenloft monster books came out they saw quite a bit of use in my homebrew world.

Creating a Gothic adaptation of C&C has been an ongoing project of mine. Most of my material should work fairly seamlessly in a Ravenloft Campaign. I will say that the tone of my materials is both more romantic and more grotesque, sexier, more morally ambivalent, and generally more grounded in unexpurgated legend, and the original Gothic novels. They are set in the world of De Sade's “Justine” and Polidori's “The Vampyre”. In terms of movies, they're more Hammer's “The Vampire Lovers” and Ken Ken Russell's “The Devils” than the old Universal monster movies.

Clavis123, that's an amazing list of resources! Thanks!

I loved the two original Ravenloft modules but somehow when it became an entire campaign setting I lost interest. (Still bought the boxed set and some of the modules, but it just wasn't the same to me.)

I highly enjoyed both Haunted Highlands and Tainted Lands, however, and both are C&C-ready!

I also recommend ssfsx17's recent post "The Order of the Ironhorn Knights", which presents a complete and suitably grotesque set of villains for medieval Gothic play.

Ravenloft is my all-time favorite setting. It's what got me into RPGs. I'm currently running a campaign online. I've been posting recaps of our sessions here.
The party's about to wrap-up the Night of the Walking Dead module. I was originally going to run a story arch I created, but between the new baby, continuing my education, and other real life stuff I decided to go mainly with published modules. On the list is Castles Forlorn and Expedition to Castle Ravenloft. I've never run either one, but I'm really looking forward to both of them. I've also been throwing around the idea of running the Judges Guild module Tegel Manor.
