Experience awards for not fighting monsters?

Post by tylermo »

My players are one final battle from wrapping up A0:The Rising Knight. Is experience awarded for monsters or creatures that the party interacted with, but(for one reason or another)didn't fight? SPOILERS.....................

SPOILERS............................

There was a Lammasu in a tower that the party didn't fight. They merely spoke to the creature who was unknown to them. They met some Pixies prior to that. Interaction only. No combat. They fought a total of 3 Gnolls(one of which was one of the two primary villains). I assume he's worth a bit more? And, they fought a handful of skeletons. One of them was a being who was partially re-animated(as a result of the Gnoll performing a sacrificial ritual on one of the PC's). Would that skeleton be worth more experience? Thanks.

That's up to you. I'd award the same experience points for an encounter avoided. But that's just me. :)

That's what I was thinking. Especially in the case of the Lammasu.

Sounds like they qualified for some role-playing experience, if they talked instead of fighting.

I give equal experience for "overcoming" a monster/NPC/etc. If players only get XP for killing they will have a greater motivation to fight than to talk or sneak or trick, etc and I like games with a good balance of fighting/talking/sneaking/tricking.

There will be some roleplaying experience, as well as the usual rewards.

Way back when, I had a player who, realizing he could get XPs
for killing things, started bashing everything that came
along -- had to start knocking down his XPs for frivolous kills.
So, YES, award them for good role-playing...managing to get
past something by negotiating, bartering, trickery, etc, should
earn something.
