Aihrdian shopping cities and where to make + weapons, etc.

Post by tylermo »

Hello. Got a couple of my A-series players asking about some sort of city between Malforten and Botkinburg for doing a bit of shopping. Wasn't sure if Mal or Bot would be the place for, among many things, making or procuring a +1 bastard sword? Would most small Aihrdian towns have composite long bows for sale, and the like?

Psuedo medieval towns dont usualy have premade goods waiting to be sold. some exceptions of course.
Have the player locate a master smith to forge the weapon out of superior quality steel. then locate a spell caster willing to enchant it.
The M&T has some guidelines for enchanting items.
I would lean to 3 to 4 thousand for a +1 sword plus some errand run for the caster. possibly locating some mystical ingrediants for the enchantment.

If i were the caster i would require as an example...
Star metal alloy sword made by a master craftsman. (meteor iron alloy)
The leather for the hand wrap must be from a mystical beast of some sort.
A 200+ valuse gem for the pommel.
Ogre blood to mix with the quenching barrel to empart the strength to the blade.
+ 3 to 4 k in gold and run an errand to collect some rare item for me.
figure a couple days to make sword and then two weeks to enchant.

I would also make said +1 sword able to cast strength spell on the weilder say 3 times a week.

Worth the effort and a prize the weilder will cherish for quite some time.
Later have him under go a quest for the church to retrieve a relic. The reward ...the cleric takes the sword and blesses it anoints it in holy oils and increases the enchantment to +2 ...repeat as the the charcter levels to keep the sword useful so they arent changing swords every other adventure.
This will become a cherished family heirloom.
Please don't beat me.

As far as where to do this in relation to the A series, you have two main options:

One, send them to the largest city in the region, Ascalon, the capital of New Aenochia, or one of the other major cities - "The real workers of power are of course going to be where the nobility (and the money) are."

Or, perhaps the mastersmith has set up shop in some remote location - perhaps next to a vein of promising ore - to focus on the perfection of his or her craft, away from the distractions of being asked to produce "mundane" items. "Oh, you want to hunt down Holgrim Hammerfist. Last I heard, he's working a mine out near Sir Aeneas' holdings where that shooting star landed a couple years ago."
"I don't wanna be remembered as the guy who died because he underestimated the threat posed by a monkey."

Well, I didn't mean to insinuate there would be Ye Ole Magic Shoppe with + weapons on a rack for sale. haha I'll take the advice and put it to good use. Don't want the knight just plopping down a grand or slightly more and just walking away with the sword. As for my druid, she's just wanting to upgrade her long bow for a composite for the extra damage. She's not seeking the +weapons at this point.

Ascalon is a great choice for expert and perhaps magical armor and weapons, but it's too far south from Malforten and probably very expensive.

Hrueset to the west of Malforten might be a better choice. Larger than Botkinburg and Ludensheim, it would most likely have armorers and sword makers that could create the +1 sword (and more).

Otherwise, if you're already in Bot or Lude ~ I would make the same assumption, that those craftmasters are available for a simple +1 sword.

Rhu - I can see Hrueset for expert weapons, certainly. Maybe magical ones, lower-level ones, perhaps; it's still a relatively small place as far as cities go, though you're correct that it's the biggest settlement in that part of the world.

Memo to self: finish that map of Hrueset begun about a year back.

Not entirely on point with the original subject, but I'd be inclined to have even a masterwork weapon as part of a larger quest. True mastersmiths ought to be rare, even for non magical weapons. Shouldn't be as easy as looking one up in the yellow parchments.

Not just "I want a +1 sword". But perhaps a certain alloy is needed, and a key ingredient is located in the treacherous Maze of Inverse or some such thing. Or, specifically to Airhde, you could even have a master bladesman need a certain kind of Rune to inscribe onto the blade that gives it an edge in battle.
