Delving Deeper...

Post by TheMetal1 »

Ok, so looks like the final ship date has been set for Delving Deeper RPG for 9 December 2011. This Brave Halflings clone of the LBB based on Swords & Wizardry and the SRD.

Will be interesting to see how this compares the S&W:WB.

Delving Deeper RPG
Brave Halfling Publishing wrote:Delving Deeper RPG closely emulates the rules of the earliest version of the world’s most popular roleplaying game. Go back to a time when every weapon did d6 damage, clerics could cast no spell at first level, only fighters could use magic swords, and if you wanted a locked door opened you had to bash the thing in! It is difficult to imagine in a world where multiple, weighty tomes comprise the rules; but this single, small book contains all you need to build a campaign that can span decades of real time! If you’re tired of trying to find the rule for determining whether your fighter is left-handed and is able to swim and just want to kill some goblins, have we got a game for you!

Delving Deeper RPG Boxed Set
This Boxed Set Contains everything you need to play:

•Volume One: Forging a Hero
•Volume Two: Codex of the Divine and the Arcane
•Volume Three: Index of the Fiendish and Malign
•Volume Four: Vault of Treasures
•Volume Five: Delving Deeper and Blazing New Trails
•Robert Conley’s, Blackmarsh Campaign Setting
•Alchemical Synergy: A S&W:Whitebox Player’s Guide for Delving Deer RPG
•A set of nine dice (3d6, 2d10, 1d20, 1d12, 1d8, 1d4)
•A pad of 25 digest character sheets

$39.95

Not since the CKG have I been awaiting a product with such impatience and anticipation.

Impatience, mostly. I don't know if I have the strength to survive one more preorder.

Hey thanks, TheMetal1!

Delving Deeper emulates the very earliest incarnation of Original Edition - back when it was just three little booklets, but it is NOT based upon Swords & Wizardry:Whitebox. However, I have added a player's guide for using Delving Deeper with Whitebox. But Delving Deeper is almost completely compatible with Labyrinth Lord.

For Castles & Crusades folks, I have added the ascending armor class and whether a critter has a Mental, Physical or Both saving throw notation in each monster description. :)

:o
Sorry about that!

Regardless, I am totally looking forward to this game as well too. The C&C help stuff is a great bonus too! Quick question for you. Will you guys post an early preview of the Campaign setting booklet cover and Alchemical Synergy? Also, I'm guessing here, but I suppose there is a starter adventure in that or will those come later?

Heh... It says right in the announcement.
Robert Conley’s, Blackmarsh Campaign Setting
Or, did you mean just a one-off adventure rather than a setting?

BTW is this a limited time offer or will there be future printings? (I don't care if the future offerings are not a boxed set, though I'd rather buy the boxed set.)

Yes. I wanted to know if there would be at least one kind of one-off adventure like within the campaign setting. Or is it a Campaign setting with a bunch of areas of interest for the GM to develop. Kind of like the The Vile Worm of the Eldritch Oak module that came with the S&W:WB. Mind you not that I need it, as there are tons of things out there to use - including C&C stuff.
Sir Ironside wrote:BTW is this a limited time offer or will there be future printings?
Looks like BHP will be selling this for a little bit anyway, as the pre-order price is 39.95, and IIRC in his blog, John said the price bumps up to 49.95 after the release date for the Box set. On the DD page, it lists the following as "Coming Soon"

Delving Deeper RPG Free PDF (no art)
Delving Deeper RPG Digest Hard Cover
Delving Deeper RPG Softcover

So it looks they'll be several options for you to get your Delving Deeper Freak on. :)

Yes, Rob did a special version of his OGL campaign setting for Delving Deeper and it does not have a cover page as much as a title page with a picture (it looks nice) and the Alchemical Synergy uses Mark Allan's WB Spells booklet piece for cover art.

Another, smaller sample setting as well as an introductory module are included in the fifth booklet, "Delving Deeper and Blazing the Trails."

I have a round 100 Delving Deeper boxed sets left in this first printing, so that should last a few more months and I may do another print run of the boxed set next fall. The full-sized (8.5' x 11') version of Delving Deeper will be released as a pdf (and a free, no-art pdf too), soft cover and hardcover versions in January.

John,

With Delving Deeper going through one final edit, do you think the game will be in our hands this year or will make an early 2012 appearance?

:!: WHISTLE BLOWING LOUDLY :!:

A weird, ancient dwarf wearing black pants along with a black and white striped shirt and leather helmet walks up to the middle of the forum/arena. He lowers the whistle from his mouth to store it somewhere within his massive beard - which is well braided and nearly touches the ground. He taps his foot impaitently as a microphone is lowered to just infront of his face.

He taps it and the speaks the words, "IS THIS ON!" It Booms annoying with a scratch across the forum.

He pauses until the echo fades and then nods his head and finally speaks.

"PERSONAL FOUL. SELF-DEPRECIATION. NUMBER...<psst...what's his number?...what? No number...it's...who...oh yes....> CORRECTION...PUBLISHER - JOHN ADAMS - BRAVE HALFLING PUBLISHING. 10 YARD PENALTY <...what?...this isn't Blood Bowl?...OH...right then..> NO NEGATIVE JOKING AND 10 MINUTE DEVOTIONAL TIME TO PONDER JUST HOW AWESOME BRAVE HALFLING HAS BEEN AND HOW MUCH JOY THE COMPANY HAS BROUGHT TO SO MANY THIS YEAR.

The microphone raises up the slowly... and the dwarf walks off the center forum, nearly tripping on his beard. He pauses for a moment and then looks over his shoulder at John and says softly. "Glad to hear the editing is going well. Take your time and we know you're making it an awesome product."

He turns to walk away again and then stops and turns again and smiles "Oh yeah, one more thing, Orthodox Christmas is on 7 January 2012. So don't limit yourself on when Christmas is...."

John, since we have your attention here - what about the Old School Boxes? Your site indicates they'll ship on the 15th or earlier. Since it's the 19th, have they gone out?

Delving Deeper, X-Plorers, X-Plorers GM pack bought them all, but don't mind waiting for a polished version. I'm especially not anxious as we all know the season and how swamped the mail system is.

My plan is to wean a group away from D&D 4e (Pathfinder) and get a C&C game going (Waiting for; Monster & Treasures of Airdhe and Of Gods & Monsters as my purchases via holiday special then eventually Classic Monsters.) , then if the reception is good ask them if they want to play the "roots" of rpg's and get into Delving Deeper, then ask them if they would like to try out a sci-fi game.

I guess we are close enough to call it one of my, "New Years resolutions." ;)

My question. Is there going to be a GM pack for Delving Deeper?

@redwulf: I sent out an email to everyone who purchased an Old-School Box today. They are not shipping yet. I messed up the color cover template format and the boxes ended up being too faded and unacceptable (my box maker knows I make "retro-stuff" and he just assumed they should be faded). The new boxes will be ready in three weeks. I have made an offer to folks who have already bought one.

@Sir Ironside: I do not know yet. The new edit of Delving Deeper is dramatically reducing the length of the text in places (much text is being moved to an annotated commentary booklet because it is commentary and options), so we may offer a Referee's Pack. One way or another, we will be making Delving Deeper as easily accessible to gamers as possible.

A thought...change the name of your company from "Brave Halfling Publishing" to "Brave Wizard Publishing." Then, if you miss a deadline, you can simply say...

:::drumroll:::

"A wizard is never late, nor is he early, he arrives precisely when he means to."

P.S. All in jest and good fun. ;)

If you're keeping up, a personal confession from John over at BHP.

Delving Deeper should be just around the corner now - very much looking forward to it.

John, if you're tuning in, I know I've exhibited some impatience for this game, but know it's out of an overwhelming desire to have it in my hands and not meant as a slight towards you in any way. I'm a pretty big fan of BHP products, and my love of X-Plorers made me a bit rabid to get my hands on Delving Deeper as well. As I commented on your post, I'm glad to hear you've landed on solid ground after the past couple of years.
