The One ring RPG

Post by concobar »

Anyone else pick it up? after years of D&D 4e this game has been quite a culture shock on me. If you have the game and have read it what are your thoughts?

I like it. I have played it a few times at GenCon. The feeling of the game is pretty different than most popular RPGs in the past decade. I'm not totally sold on the system, but one thing they got right is that The One Ring FEELS like Lord of the Rings/The Hobbit. The game play is pretty reminicent of the Professor's writing I think. I do like how skills are handled in TOR quite a bit. 3 groups of 6 skills. Skill levels range from 1-6. I'm not too interested in how weapon damage is determined. It's a bit too obtuse, and overly complicated for my tastes.

I love it. Like Omote said, it feels like Middle Earth. Heck, it feels a lot like that elusive game that I've had in my head for years.

I think I pretty much have a handle on the rules which are complex in their simplicity. Every task is determined by the same mechanic which is basically a standard Task system with a few complications added. Roll one D12 plus a number of dice equal to your characters skill level. Add the dice togather and hope the total exceeds the TN set by the LM (Lore Master). Seems simple right?

A roll of "G" or "F" or what ever the rune for gandalf is on the D12 is a success regardless of Target number.
A roll showing the eye of Sauron on the D12 is counted as zero.

Reverse these rules for monsters.

Each roll of 6 on a skill dice increases the level of success.
A roll of one, two, or three on a skill die count as zero if the character is weary.

A character can use a hope point to add the attribute score associated with the skill to the die total.

Endurance is kinda like HP but not really.

Wound mechanic makes this game deadly.
One good hit from any weapon can take a monster out of a fight.
Two good hits from any weapon will remove a character from a fight.

Armor is important for combat survival but makes the journey to and from the adventure more dangerous and tiring.

More thoughts as they occur to me.
