Pseudo Dragons and their SR

Post by mgtremaine »

Was curious how anyone else is handling this, BTB the Pseudodragons SR says....

SPELL RESISTANCE: Pseudodragons have a Spell Resistance of 10. If the pseudodragon is a familiar, this quality is passed on to its wizard companion.

Old School they conveyed the Spell resistance to any companion not just a Wizard/Familiar combo. In my 30+ years I've never had a player encounter a pseudodragon other then with a find familiar.

(Long in game explanation...)

That has recently changed, by stoke of good luck my son's Wizard had a random encounter with a Pseudodragon who I played to the hilt. Talking from inside obscuring mists, hiding from sight and using ghost sounds and all his tricks to stay hidden. But he did charge the young Wizard and his companion to retrieve a Silver Chalice for him which was very well hidden in the dungeon below. (Actually in the Minotaurs horde in Dark Journey, shameless plug! Buy it you'll like it.) The Wizard actually manage to find the Chalice and return it to the misty room that the Pseudodragon was in. My son then rolled a 20 on his CHR check for reaction. I pretty much gave in and decided that the Pseudodragon was so over joyed that it revealed itself and has taken up with the Wizard. The Chalice now has a long backstory itself and it is and had been the Pseudodragon bed.....

The Wizard already has a cat familiar so this is just a companion. Should I give him SR while in contact or not? I'm leaning towards no but was curious if anyone else has dealt with this in C&C. (SR 10 is after all much better then the old MR 35% )

I'd say give it to him.

Such excellent rolls and opportunities are not to be wasted.

I'd also say no in regards to sharing the SR. I read that not so much as companion in as much friends as I would as a wizard's familiar. As a companion, there is no special bond other than mutual interests/goals and possibly friendship that would warrant a bond as to be magical in nature.

What I might do instead would be to give the wizard a bonus in learning new spells since his buddy the dragon might be assisting him in his studies...
