Barbarian, 3rd printing Vs 4th printing

Post by Lobo316 »

Forgive me, I don't have my 4th printing book with me, but looking at the barbarian last night, does the 4th printing have a "rage" ability?

The 3rd printing one has a Primal Fury that starts at 3rd level, but i could not see where the 4th printing barbarian has a "rage or fury" ability, at least not through 4th or 5th level, am I missing something here?

Just seems wrong to not have a barbarian that cannot rage ;)

Is anyone using both version in thier game (don't see why they would not work just fine side by side). Or has anyone added the primal fury ability of the 3rd printing barbarian to the 4th printing version?

Here is the link for the Errata/update for 4th Printing of the PHB

http://www.trolllord.com/downloads/pdfs ... Errata.pdf

For reference, they get the intimidate ability to start with. Opponents save vs. CHA or have -2 against him in a 15 ft radius. They also start with primeval instinct where they can get a 'last ditch' +4 to a STR check. At 4th Level they can do a Whirlwind Attack (attack against 2 people, increases every so many levels). At 6th Level they can get a hit point bump with the ability primeval will.

Not real clear on two things though...

1. whether the every opponent who fails is at a -2 against just the barbarian or any other opponents.

2. Also, not clear if the last ditch is just a skill check or can be used for combat.

I haven't used 4th Edition Barbarian, but would rule no to the first (only barbrian) and would allow a one time bonus for a combat attack.

The thing is there is no "rage" feat penalty for using these which is interesting.

Thanks for the link. I think both versions are pretty cool, I guess I just associate the barbarian with the "rage-like" ability (call it whatever you will).

That's mostly a 3.X-ism, I believe.

Since C&C tries to draw more of its references from 1E, it makes sense that they'd forgo the 3.X-take and go for something a little more like Conan and a little less like a Berserker.

You may be right, no argument here. Still, I would be curious to see how many people out there are using the 3rd printer version instead of, or in addition to, the 4th printing?

Yeah, rage didn't become synonymous with the barbarian until 3rd Edition. 1st and 2nd had them more survialist-types...and something could be said of summoning a barbarian horde, but I digress. ;) They took on a more "survivalist" bent in the older editions, while rangers had a more "wilderness warden/scout" mindset. I think 3rd took both of those and mashed them into the ranger and they brought in the rage mechanics and gave those to the reintoduced barbarian. I really like the direction the 4th printing barbarian took.

I see no reason why the 3rd printing barbarian can't be used alongside the 4th printing, though I'd change the 3rd printing's moniker to "Savage" or "Berzerker"
LD's C&C creations - CL Checker, a witch class, the half-ogre, skills, and 0-level rules

Yea, that's not a bad idea either. A different moniker that is. Different "types" of barbarians. I'll allow either variety in my game, sure!
