Spot Hidden vs. Find Trap

Post by shadowspawn »

Does anyone use the Find Trap (INT) check for Thieves to spot hidden doors? I know that Spot Hidden is a (WIS) check but it seems to me thieves would be better at it than other classes and should get to use their Level bonus. On a related note I prefer to use (DEX) for surprise.

And yes I have a "slight" bias towards thieves but anyone who would enter a dungeon wearing only leather armor while scouting ahead deserves a break!

O.k, someone can correct me if I'm wrong here but... I think anyone can spot hidden doors (and could logically add their level since it's not a class-specific thing). The thing about elves is they get to do a roll even if they're not looking for it as long as they're near one. When actively looking for one, they get a +2.

So basically Rogues can go ahead and add their level for those searches. :)

As far as I know from the PHB, you are correct.

While I could definitely see wanting to do that with the rogue class, manual dexterity and quickness of reaction time really has nothing to do with not becoming surprised. "Surprise establishes who becomes aware first." Sensing something is not a function of dexterity.

OK, I thought you could only add your Level to class abilities and since nobody has Spot Hidden you could not add it. Which seemed strange to me.

For Surprise I think of it as a reaction to a situation, as in who reacts first. I agree there really are two components reading the situation and then reacting to it. You could combine two stats say WIS and DEX but that is probably over-thinking it. So, I think Rogues would be better at not being surprised as opposed to Clerics and Druids.
