O.k, this game looks like it could be really awesome (and different enough from C&C to guarantee another D&D-style buy)... I don't have it yet so I can't know for sure, but I like what I see!

I own it and it does look great (I kicked in on the IndieGoGo).
The preview shows nothing useful really.

I'm not trying to say anything against C&T, but why not play Swords & Wizardry Complete? The games look pretty similar.

Ha, because I don't own it, hoss! Ha. No doubt they are similar, C&T is an S&W variant.

That's what I was thinking. C&T looks like an "upped" S&W, which makes it seem like Swords & Wizardry Complete. I've never read C&T, just seem the various previews posted here.

I just read the preview and ME LIKEY! seems goal is gritty pulp fantasy like Howard et al, instead of high fantasy
(I think I'm using those terms correctly, LOL)

It's a S&W variant

I quote from the preview:
How is Crypts & Things different from Swords & Wizardry Core?

Characters
The Fighter has optional fighting styles, to add more
options and fun and to differentiate between fighter
characters.

Adds the Barbarian character class based off the version
of the class originally published in White Dwarf 2 in
1977.

Adds the Thief class. This is a more martially-inclined
version of the Thief, inspired by the Grey Mouser from
Fritz Leiber’s Lankhmar stories.

Adds the Magician class, which combines the spell lists
of the Magic-User and Cleric, and then separates them
into White/Grey and Black magic spell lists.

Higher Abilitiy bonuses (+1 to +3) to highlight
exceptional characters. {meh}

Removes the Cleric and Magic-user Class

No Elves, Dwarfs or Halflings..
No Turning the Undead either as a class ability or spell.

But... but... C&C uses those same bonuses! o.O

Heh heh, I'm probably going to pick up this game next week via the web site. (soft cover to save monies!)

I didn't read it carefully, I saw "higher" and thought 3.5/PF power creep without really realizing the bonus range.

anyway, I think I'm going to get this, I love the feel and tone of it.

anyone played it?

Haven't been able to play it yet. Sounds like a lot of fun, but I only have time to run one system at the moment (and that is C&C).

Not exactly...

Both share a more 'pulpy' feel, but it seems like C&T still wants you to swing that axe confidently, so to speak, whereas LotFP is a game where you should be more careful.

For example, C&T is a game for characters like Conan, while LotFP seems to be more like a game for characters such as Van Richten.

One thing I'm curious about is if Swords & Wizardry bestiaries would work as they are with C&T... I imagine they should if C&T is a variant of S&W...

Well, this is slightly off-topic regarding this thread, but you can get the no-art free PDF of the rules for Lamentations of the Flame Princess at their web site. I suggest you take the time to read their spells... Their summoning one in particular is a HUGE departure from traditional D&D!

As for Crypts & Things, their spellcaster replaces the wizard and cleric but has white, gray and black magic. Black magic will cost you sanity and even Wisdom if things go wrong. It really encourages the idea that most spellcasters in those kinds of stories are insane and/or evil.
