New C&C Fan

Post by MormonYoYoMan »

Since our middle dotter & son-in-lawfulgood were volunteering allll day at the cannery/welfare storehouse, we were watching the three youngest grandkids from 9 ayem to 9 peeyim...and thus no visit to a shop for Free RPG Day.

So the next best thing was to introduce our youngest grandson to C&C with a one-page dungeon. "Can I be a ninja?" he wondered.

"Sure you can! This is Castles and Crusades, and you can be aything!" So he loaded up with weapons and sneaky gimmicks. Sure, I let him have anything he could find in the PH. He's my grandson!

And then he started the game by waking up to find himself locked in a dungeon cell, having been stripped of all his weapons and gimmicks.

He may be my grandson, but there's no need to spoil the little guy.

Oh yeah - the granddotters, 3 and 5, wanted to play, so they got to roll dice for the monsters. Everybody won.

It's always nice to get the kids playing RPGs. Great family time and really encourages imagination and creativity. Congrats to you for getting them started!

This is the best way to get kids interested. One of our gamers has a son who is around 5 and doesn't have the patience to actually play yet, but he has a blast rolling my dice for me. I just point out which to roll and he does, then calls out the number. Sometimes I have him roll for no actual reason, which gives him fun and makes the players nervous. Win-win.

It may have been kinda mean, in a way, but he had SO much fun (He had to not only escape the cell, but find weapons along the way to help him escape.) learning to use "only" his skills. He has been begging me, from almost the moment we ended, to run another adventure for him. I told him I'd have another ready by next Friday or Saturday.

Says who these rules are too complicated for little kids?

Wow! If one gets approval from The Man himself, one should retire immediately before anything goes wrong!

It's so neat hear about children learning to play. I taught mine years ago and they preferred it to even the best video games that came about when they were older.

Well played!

And keep in mind that they don't need to master the rules to the point of running a game. All they need to do is know enough about what to roll when, or at least be able to take direction from the DM or other players as to what to roll when. Heck, some of my adult players don't know which dice to roll in which situations. :-)

Good point, my son was 8 when I taught him C&C. He was 11 when he ran his first game (ok so it was Fin's S&W Whitebox as the rules but that's just mere details.) Really getting them into the story and having them accept that random rolls can make the story that much more exciting and fun is all that matters.

[Still love Yoyo's you can have everything, you wake up with nothing. chuckle....]
