Thank You Troll Lords

Post by BudaZoa »

After playing C&C for years now, I didn't realize how even 1ed is rule restrictive.

I have always loved 1ed and how awesome and simple the mechanics of it was, until running and playing C&C campaigns for the past few years.

C&C really takes the whole "Textbook Lawyer" aspect put of rpg and makes for much easier and quicker combat.

Playing in my most recent 1ed campaign was a HUGE eye opener.

I can't imagine how I'd see many of the other rpg's I used to play.

Gotta love the beauty of the siege engine !

Just wanted to give a shout to the people at Troll Lords and say thank you.

Very nice. I had a similar experience when I tried to go back to 1st edition for a single adventure. It didnt feel the same and the rules felt like they were in the way of the adventure. Still, I will always have love for the game even if it's no longer my preferred engine for fantasy gaming.

Yep. Fantasy RPG for me now means C&C or T&T, though I retain fondness for so many of the other systems. But I no longer have time for the rules to fight me, even if I want a realistic experience.

I'm with the yo-yo guy. For me, fantasy RPGing is first, Castles & Crusades. After that, it's various classic editions of D&D. C&C is fantasy RPGing for me. I'll never go back.

I feel the same way... C&C is definitely my game of choice... especially for campaigns (ongoing games). I still enjoy many other systems for "one-off" games, but it's C&C all the way for continuing games.

Yep.

I was playing C&C with some local folks. We were talking about our next campaign, and I started thinking about what kind of character I wanted to play, and how easy it would be to create him in C&C. Then they decided they wanted to play a 1st ed. clone. At first I thought, "Well, close enough" - until I realized how restrictive 1st ed. is with character creation (stat requirements, class/race/level limits, etc.). "No thanks," I said. It's C&C for me, all the way.

Not at all hard to.create whatever character you.want with C&C, is it? I was able to create.Iron Man, Capt America, and Pyroman with ease.

The WotC reprints of AD&D got me looking at that system again, and just reinforced my love of C&C. When my group moved from OD&D to AD&D around 1980, I resisted and stayed with OD&D. Now I can remember why.

C&C gives me the "feel" of AD&D without the bulkiness.

For decades , I was a die hard 1ed fan. I enjoy aspects od 2ed as well and many of the campaigns my friends and I played throughout the 90's and early 2000's was a 1ed with splashed 2ed rules.

Then one of my friends, a loyal Gygax fan, came to us with this amazing system. He claimed it had everything great about 1ed and the freedom to roleplay based upon what your mind could come up with. Many of us resisted, we have all played bad systems before and stick to what works for us.

From the first session we played , we were all hooked. We had a few first time players in our group, new to rpg, and they got it right away.

We were all amazed and all we could say was, Troll Lords did it !

They made a system based upon fun plus imagination without the restrictions of rule to encumber gameplay !

The fun part, for me as GM, is that when (not if) I forget all the other rules, I only need to remember a Siege roll - for any forgotten rule.

I have to concur!! C&C is my go-to game anymore. We tried OSRIC, which as most know is AD&D with ther serial number filed off. My memories of AD&D play like C&C, but the reality of revisting it through OSRIC was a mess. I forgot how complex playing it by-the-book really is.

As a side note, we've been playing B/X lately. Between 6 players, we've lost somewhere around 13 characters in 8 sessions. The most senior character is 4 sessions old, and only half way to 2nd level. As much as I love the B/X mindset and ruleset, the truth is that it is Viet Nam in a tunnel.

This is how I found C&C. I was dusting off my 2nd ed AD&D books, and then the player's options books, and then the "complete" books... and got overwhelmed. I was like, "how can I do this?" Back in the day, we added rules as we felt like it and it was no big deal because we had been playing with the first set for a while, then added options as they came out a little at a time, but I recall a few times when us "veteran" players tried to introduce a new player and it was like, "don't panic, just narrate what you want to do and we'll tell you what to roll"... hmm... but we did acknowledge that we were playing with a pile of rules about a foot thick! (let me rummage thru my backpack for 10 minutes to find that rule....

Ahhh, Siege... It almost seemed too simple at first, but it's so great!

For whatever little part I may be able to stake a level of claim... you're welcome.

Now, back to gaming. Or, at least talking about it.
