Need shield translation

Post by nightstorm »

I created a shield device and need the jargon used to describe them. Please :D The rock on the bottom is a meteor that is sacred to the knightly order.

I am no herald, but I took a crack at it. My guess at the blazon would be:

"Azure, 2 mullets per chief Sable, two-faced sun and moon combined per fess Or, a meteor per base Or"

Well that certainly sounds official. :) It's a hard one I know.

I completely misunderstood your question.

Based upon Francis J. Grant's The Manual of Heraldry (1962 printing):
On a shield azure, two mullets argent dexter and sinister in chief, the sun in its splendor or with moon in its splendor or brouchant in fess, a meteor or in middle base.

I am assuming that the mullets are intended to be silver, which in black and white renditions of coats of arms would be noted by the color white.

I'm not trying to pick on Aergraith here, as his is in fact rather close. But his rendition misses a few things, notably the proper description of the sun/moon combination. There is also no sable in the shield itself, that color being the background of the graphic.

EDIT: After typing this, I noticed Aergraith DID locate the sun and moon as well as the meteor, so I removed that portion of my statement. Sorry dude. :)

Well, as you'll note I edited my post slightly. Like I said there, sorry about that.

If anyone wishes to learn more about heraldry, The Manual of Heraldry by Francis J. Grant is a good book to have. It can be previewed and downloaded in its entirety at its Google Books page. Another heraldry book is A Practical Manual of Heraldry by Francis J. Baigent. Available for preview and download here. Both books are concise, being less than 150 pages apiece, but both are also in the public domain, having been printed prior to 1923.

While I have a 1962 printing of the former book, I downloaded both PDFs for my tablet. However there are some instances where it's quicker to use a physical book. :)

Thank you all so much. I wanted to add that little bit of realism to it. I'll post the order soon.

This is what I have so far. The idea is an old one of mine that I never finished completely.

Knights of the Celestial Vault

Requirements: Knight Class only , Any non evil alignment, Any race, Male only

Origins
This Knightly Order has a very strange history. According to the Vault, Five peasants, while working, almost were struck by a meteor that felled to Oearth while tilling the fields. The meteor gave off a strange energy that gave the five the gift of prophecy. The Five saw a plot to kill the King. When they has stopped receiving the vision, the Five automatically decided to go and stop the assassination. In the ensuring events the Five stopped the killer and were rewarded with the title of Knighthood by the King. All did not end well though for the Five had kept the source of their information secret. When word got out to the King on how they had come upon the information he demanded the Five to turn over the meteor to him for he feared the meteor. Now why this was and why the Five decided to keep it a secret in the first place depends on who tells the story. But in the end the result was the Five breaking away from the King (after a bloody battle) and forming a knightly order of their own.

Members
This order was never very numerous to begin with. While the exact number is unknown, it is believed to be no more than 300 world wide. While they are on good terms with the major Orders (for those who have heard of them) they are seen at best as being quaint. Being very traditional and old fashioned, they do on allow women into the ranks. Even so, this group of knights do not suffer from a machismo attitude one would expect from a group that does not allow women. In fact, they are known to work with women outside the order when on assignments.

Beliefs and Customs
The Vault centers it’s operations around the meteor rock that fell many years ago. It is stationed in the Center Base of the Order where Clerics/ Knights watch over it and receive visions from it. It’s from these visions that many of the Knights’ endeavors come from. When a new knight is accepted into the order he is brought to the meteor and exposed to it. While most do not receive a vision, some do and these members are accorded more prestige in the order. But even if no vision is forth coming, it is known that several knights have had visions later on.

Herald Device
On a shield azure, two mullets argent dexter and sinister in chief, the sun in its splendor or with moon in its splendor or brouchant in fess, a meteor or in middle base

On a blue background, two stars next to one another, with Sun and Moon in profile with a meteor on the bottom.
