An off-topic rant....

Post by Inkpot »

Okay, so I copied this from one of my blogs....just felt the need to rant a little more...heheh

Okay, so this one's a bit of a rant. You have been warned.

I am getting SO FRIKKIN' SICK of whiney-ass emo kids and their sad attempts to gain attention and/or notoriety. They go on and on about how their life is pain, and I feel my temper flare up. Your life is pain? Maybe you should visit a third world country sometime. Maybe you should take a look at parents who are forced to watch helplessly as their children slowly starve to death before their eyes. Maybe you should talk to some of the people who've had to see their families get tortured, raped, mutilated and murdered because their political or religious views didn't match that of the ones in power at the time.

Or better yet, maybe you should take a trip down to the local soup kitchen (do you even know what the hell that is?) and talk to the people who don't have a warm place to sleep, let alone regular meals to eat. Do you know who they are? They're the people you ignore when you pass them on the street on your way to Hot Topic. They're the ones who would be grateful beyond belief to have that twenty bucks you just HAD to spend on the new Emo-Band-Of-The-Minute album. Or what about the kids that are being sexually and/or physically abused right this minute? Or how about the people with terminal illnesses?

You think your life is so horrible? Why don't you try helping people with REAL problems? Get involved instead of sitting in your room wallowing in your own perceived 'misery'. There are a zillion charities and organizations who are dying for volunteers or even a small donation every now and then.

You'd be amazed at how petty and miniscule your own problems look when you've given a sack of groceries to a family with no food in the cupboards.

In closing, I just want to point out that if you honestly have a REAL problem like the ones I've mentioned above, then it's up to you to GET HELP. TALK TO SOMEONE. There are churches and other agencies designed to help you help yourself. Call them.

As for the rest of you, quit your frikkin' whining and grow up! It's not that "no one understands you". We understand you perfectly, and your tired, self-centered mewling is boring the shit out of us.

That should be a prerequisite for whining. You have to wear the Emu suit.

I'm glad you mentioned Hot Topic: the reason Emo exists is because Emo sells. Capitalism hopes to stamp out all legitimate philosophies and religions because they're not marketable. But with Emo and "spooky" you can rake in these kids' money by selling them sentiments that confirm their disaffection.

But you can't sell "virtue" or "the moral object". In fact, that generates anti-sales.

Basically, wherever Hegel says "State" read instead "Commercial Enterprise" and you'll have understood our society substantially.

Why do you think I couldn't handle being a HS teacher anymore? I was tired of all the irresponsibility and all the excuses being made for it.
Since its 20,000 I suggest "Captain Nemo" as his title. Beyond the obvious connection, he is one who sails on his own terms and ignores those he doesn't agree with...confident in his journey and goals.

Emus are pretty cool. Emo kids are not. I hate that sort of mass-marketed subculture crud.

To add to the loathing, I hate all the bands that have taken the trappings of Goth and turned it into cheap commercialism.

Music is one of my deepest passions. I've been in bands for the last 12 years, with each one getting progressively more "unlistenable." Started with Goth, then Black Metal, and now Power Electronics/ Dark Ambient. At my shows, I love seeing the vapid trendy-hipsters run while trying to jam their fingers as deep as possible into their ears. Petty, I know.

But you know, it isn't all youth. There are plenty of young adults who are involved in social outreach, the churches or other religious institutions, and who are genuinely engaged in the world around them.

Unfortunately, as others have said, there's more money to be made in fostering egocentrism and existential angst. But lest we get a little too hypocritical, emo is just my generations mass-produced grunge, hair metal bands, or punk.

You're absolutely right, Witterquick. And in my day, we were just as sad, whiny, and annoying....except that we had to endure The New Kids On The Block. We had a REASON to be angsty, man!! None have suffered as we have suffered....

Exactly! Teenagers listen to some awful music (they always have; I trashed some of my embarrassing cassettes years ago ) and have the time to devote to caring about the music and who's cool. Usually when they become adults reality sets in and caring about bands and "stuff" really doesn't mean a whole-hell-of-a-lot. As far as music goes there's only three things to remember: 1. Frank Sinatra is the greatest singer ever! 2. Rush is the greatest band ever! 3. Not all country music sounds like that crap that passes for country on the radio. I've got XM and my iPod and I NEVER have to hear any crappy music that I don't want to!

Every generation has their cadre of "pissed at the world" youth that have yet to experience life enough to know what real suffering is. A lucky but substantial number of people never do. My military experience gave me a first hand look at the living conditions in more than one deeply impoverished area. I say let the silly kids be silly, ignorant and untarnished kids. This side of the glass is a lot more sobering.

The only problem I can see with that sentiment (and this is strictly just one guys' opinion here) is that apathetic, complacent children usually grow up to be apathetic, complacent adults. My eldest is in need of a bit of an eye opener on how the world operates. While my 'rant' was not directed at her, I'm strongly considering signing the two of us up to volunteer at our local foodbank in the hopes that it may give her a different perspective on a few things.

I just don't like mass-market sentiments. Call me old-fashioned.
Actually, since I teach ancient and Mediaeval philosophy... yeah, I'm old-fashioned.

I agree with and respect the message you are conveying. Im not entirely sure I agree that the vast majority of these hipster doofuses will grow up maintaining their apathetic natures, but I am not an authority on psychology so take it for what it's worth. Hell, take anything I say with a grain of salt. Im a gun toting, mildly paranoid, and pessimistic product of my military experiences.
