Savage Worlds: I don't get it

Post by Relaxo »

I'm trying to buy the dead tree version of SW from my FLGS. They "just sold out" so they're ordering it.
What is the Latest, Greatest Core Book for SW, in PRINT that I ask them to order?

The Explorers Edition? On Pinnacle's website, I'm only finding pdfs... what am I doing wrong?

Thank you all!

Savage Worlds Deluxe Explorer’s Edition is the one I bought in print. Well worth it too, in my opinion.

Since its 20,000 I suggest "Captain Nemo" as his title. Beyond the obvious connection, he is one who sails on his own terms and ignores those he doesn't agree with...confident in his journey and goals.

Yeah, digest size. I found a copy at my FLGS and snatched it up.

Ya, they've always gone with the business model of a very cheap core rule book, then separate setting books (which are often color, hardcover, and so naturally pricier). It makes sense to me - it makes it especially easy for a GM with a shiny new setting book to get players if he can sell them on the cheap core rule book buy-in.

Mine wasn't digest sized, but I had heard there is a digest version that is $10. Since this is paperback I imagine this is it. Mine is hard cover. Even so, I got it via Amazon for under $20.

Over at RPG Now, it has a little blurb saying there is no difference between the Savage World Deluxe Explorer edition and regular edition. The content is the same, it's just that the formating is smaller for the explorer edition.

So you just have to decide if you want a big rulebook or little rulebook - both with the same stuff in it.

Actually, I think they cleaned up a decent handful of errata when they published the digest sized version. They are very good when it comes to correcting errata ...

It wasn't that much in the first place. At least when I last looked. I probably should see if it has been added to.

No, it wasn't that bad. Here's the errata sheet they put out for the hardcover:

Very cool!
I think the "Explorer" means it's smaller and easy to carry around, paperback for 10 hardback (maybe full size) is 30.
Now that I have a clue, thank you all very much!

Ordered thru my FLGS to give them the business. also, they take B&N gift cards (I can't understand how, but whatever) and since I've got a B&N gift card burning a hole in my wallet, it's all good.

Thanks everyone!

IT LIVES!
:D

I did, in fact, snag the Explorer's edition of the deluxe SW. I do dig it. I see its influence on Amazing Adventures too. it does seem like it's Fast Furious Fun! I think I have to re-read the combat primer on Pinnacle's website though. I didn't realize it "requires" minis, but it also seems easy enough to skip them.

So in short, yes it looks cool. I'm having a little trouble wrapping my head around character creation... I really dig classes as a starting point, but I guess I'd just use the examples and pick Advantages (or whatever they're called) right?

One nitpick, the Burst spell uses a cone template, but Blast uses a burst template? huh? :-)

I don't have or ever played Savage Worlds, nor have I played many mini games but, I wanna play the game too and take a shot and see how close I am to the target (See what I did there?)

I'm guessing that the "template" part is in reference to the mini part of the game and each template has a different area of effect.

Yeah that's totally it. The burst template is a circle, and the blast is a cone. it thought it was funny that the spell "burst" is a ray and "Blast" is a burst... it's just funny (not like, ha ha funny) that the template and spell have different shapes.

maybe it's just me. :D

Check out the test drive rules free download, it's what convinced me to pick up the game, and for 10 bucks, why not?

Don't get me wrong, I like Savage Worlds, especially the Solomon Kane stuff, but when I have my druthers I prefer CORTEX. It is very similar, but does not use the cards or benny system, and over all feels much simpler to run. Plus it ties in to some pretty awesome settings too, such as Supernatural, Smallville, and all the other Margaret Weis RPG's. Not precisely, because much like with Savage Worlds, they adapt the rules to meet specific needs of each setting.

So if, and I do mean "IF", you find SW feeling a little too gimmicky and a little rules over loaded, give CORTEX a look.

I played SW almost exclusively for a few years. It doesn't actually require minis, despite the way it's written. I rarely used them, and never had an issue.

I agree. The really fixed things after releasing the Serenity rpg. A lot of people broke the game and complained about it.

Yeah, I didn't get into it at all until they put out the CORTEX rule book.

Savage Worlds is fun but WAY to easy to get into trouble running a game.

We play all kinds of settings and have a blast but it is WAY too easy to put a unbeatable monster against the party or have a nearly unbeatable monster one shoted by a lucky role.

I just feel way more constrained in SW than say C&C and that just feels strange coming from a game that should be so fast and furious!
